JACK LEXINGTON
My life had been so myserable in the past four months that I hardly remember what relaxing or having a 'good time' means. In between Noreen getting reaped, me getting shot and falling into a deep, deep hole because my life suddenly lost all meaning without her and our unborn children, I got so wrapped up in drinking myself stupid that 'fun' simply hadn't been an option.
The downward spiral my life had taken got turned around when my good friend Devroux gave me a good hard kick in the ass for letting myself go so much and finally Mace Emberstatt greeted me at the train station of district 10 with my children, that I didn't even know were alive until then, in his hands.
Those two little beings drown every bit of energy from me but at the same time they gave me back my life. Finally I am able to think straight again, feel love and a bit of joy. I'm on my way up from that hole!
Today my parents have decided to give me a few hours off to try and relax a little. What's better than spending a few hours off swimming and out in the woods?
There's a small patch of maple trees, that have turned all shades of red, orange and yellow and look like they were on fire, not too far away from town. It's a nice fall day and I figured the sun is warm enough to go for one last swim before the winter cold turns the land into a landscape of ice and snow.
Taking my clothes off I stand there hidden in the forest on the banks of the creek with the sun warming my freckled shoulders. I'm not brave enough to just jump into the water under the branch of a tree where some kids have tied a long rope to swing into the water. It just seems too cold. Yet i dare to dip my feet in.
"Damnit!" I pull my bare foot back out because the water temperature seems to have dropped considerably since I'd been here last.
It takes all my guts and a lot of time for me to still wade into it and finally sink under the surface. It's freezing so I swim as fast as I can to keep my body warm. After a while I get somewhat used to it but am looking very forward to getting out and sunbathing on the banks.
I can see a fish jump in front of me and wonder if he feels cold.
When I turn onto my back I suddenly spot a person a little further down the banks. If she or he spots me he must think I've lost it, so I dive under the water for a moment. When i come back up the person is still there. Wonderful!
