THE WARSAW FAMILY

A middle class family in District Ten, the Warsaws have had a bit of a tough time in life, so their friends and neighbors find it difficult to judge them for making their own trouble in return. Even though it has been ten years since their Peacekeeper father, Dorian Warsaw, was declared a traitor, avoxed, and sent to the Capitol to live the remainder of his life in servitude, the event remains fresh in too many minds to be forgotten. He had been a good, honest man... too good and too honest, in fact, and met his own demise while trying to help a man falsely accused to murder escape the District. The man escaped, but Dorian received his punishment in his stead and his family has yet to come to terms with these misfortunes of history.

JONAH EMMETT WARSAW // CASS
(Male, 18 and older than Olivia)

Jonah's just as loud and ornery as his sister, maybe even more so. He has a habit of riling people up and picking at their insecurities for his own amusement. Sitting there with bulletproof calm and a cocky grin as someone else's anger is about to explode makes him feel like he has a little more control in the world than he actually does — he finds other people's discomfort comforting. In a world of endless chaos, he wants to be the eye of the storm, an oasis when everything else is spinning, spinning, spinning into destruction. So many people have tried to punch the shit-eating grin off Jonah's face that the bridge of his nose permanently zig-zags from the breaks and all his expressions sit a little crooked on his features. He has never once swung his fist back, however, so his aggressors tend to give up easily. Few people even bother these days, knowing Jonah is an off-kilter kind of pacifist. The truth of it is that he's been training up his self-restraint all these years, because the kind of anger that dwells within him would be beyond dangerous if ever something managed to trigger it. At this point, however, that would take an event that threatened to destroy his life... again.



OLIVIA "OLLIE" FREY WARSAW // LALIA
(Female, 18 and younger than Jonah)

Seven years ago Olivia accidentally discovered a supposed-to-be-secret stash of pornographic photos in her brother Jonah's room and kept them for herself. She likes the way the people in the photos know how to show everything to the world except their honest emotions, but how people looking at images like these reveal their some of their most vulnerable moments in return. Since then, she has become an amateur photographer and the porn kingpin of District Ten, distributing a smutty, homemade zine that leaves little to the imagination. Her... hobby isn't quite the secret her mother wishes it was and most people tend to call it an act of teenage rebellion, blaming her father's incident. The thing is: Olivia wants her very existence to be an act of rebellion. Maybe she's doing a proper job of that already though, because despite her outspoken opinions about a girl's equal rights to objectify... what the world doesn't know is that Olivia's a bumbling, incoherent virgin when it comes to having an actual relationship.



ADEN LINCOLN WARSAW // KAY
(Male, 17, Eddie Redmayne FC)

Like his mother, Aden has faith in a higher power. Only, it's not just that he wants to believe that everything happens for a reason, it's that he firmly believes that each and every moment in life is an act of God's will. Dorian Warsaw was taken away from his family and had his tongue cut out because God wanted it to be so. Lydie Mansonna and Damion Winters died in the 62nd Hunger Games because God needed them in heaven. The sun rises when God opens His eyes and sets when He looks away. Aden breaths because his lungs must do so... until God says they should not ever again. To Aden, there is no shame in his family's past or present — everything is as it should be. There is nothing fake in his smiles or insincere as he bows his head at dinner to pray along with his mother's much more fragile and sometimes contrastingly uncertain voice. He cannot hate the world for being exactly as it's supposed to be.



MILO WARSAW // SEMPER
(16, male)

Milo has a big mouth. He grew up listening to the entire District talking about rumors to do with his family, so he just figured that was what was supposed to happen, even to this day. You want to gossip about his older sister being a trashy porn addict or his younger brother crying in public? Oh, sure, that's fine. Milo heard a great piece of gossip the other day about how your mother is cheating on your father with the milk man and he's just been itching to share it with you. Usually he's not trying to be mean about it, it's all just tat for tit and the way of the world. Frankly, Milo's a little numb to it all at this point and would like to put his impressive memory to better use than bothering about how many dead birds Icarus Emberstatt collected this week, but it's just so hard to concentrate on science facts when the two girls sitting right behind him in class are whispering about the latest scandals. Habits die hard and Milo can't begin to learn how to shut up until everyone else does.



EMERY WARSAW // DANNY
(Male, 15)

Emery idolizes his sister. It's not only because he thinks Olivia's a sex god — the Jesus of porn, come down to earth to show the world The Way — but she seems indestructible. Sure, his big brother Jonah knows how to take a punch, but Emery has witnessed people attempting to crucify Olivia with words, the kinds of words that could kill an ordinary person... like him. When he was little, he remembers walking in on her crying over their father and he didn't understand it then, but he does now because these days Emery's the one who cries (and cries and cries). When he sees other boys playing catch with their father or parents scolding their children over bad grades... or any of the other things Emery can't remember. Because for him, these are things that never happened and the emptiness of things that aren't in his past that should have been catches him off guard so that when he sees a father teaching his son how to drive, it's like a punch in the gut. It's like their smiles are screaming YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THIS at him and so he doesn't want to be Jonah, who just shuts it all out, because then even less would be happening. Instead Emery wants to be Olivia, who cries over the awful things in life and gets over it — gets past it — even if the whole District is there to witness his childish breakdowns.



(ADOPTED #1) WARSAW // MEG
(Female, Isabelle Allen FC)

Living off begged scraps, stolen pennies and the discarded food after market-day, this little girl is a street-rat, plain and simple. She has only vague recollections of who her parents were, and has been raised by her fellow homeless, leaving her untrusting, brave, and cunning. Adopted by Aden, she is at first particularly wary of the boy's kindness, but the continuous flow of food into her malnourished body keeps her from fleeing. Eventually, she'll learn to love the family's religious way, to the point of being particularly evangelical. Then, she'll use her streetwise ways to help people 'come to God' - for example, pickpocketing someone and then telling them she'll give them back their money if they promise to go to Church. She'll compromise with herself, telling her that she's allowed to break rules if they're helping others, and struggle between different aspects of what she believes is right, what she's taught is right, and the way that she's grown up, perhaps even reverting for a little while back to living on the streets, because she just can't deal with having something to be thankful for.

DORIAN WARSAW // CHARADE
(Male, 41)

After being declared a traitor to Panem for helping an innocent man escape a corrupt justice system, Dorian had his tongue cut out and was sent to the Capitol to live out the remainder of his life as an avox and servant. Despite his infinite longing for his family, every day he hears no news about them is a blessing to him. He hopes desperately to never hear the names of his children ever again, because he knows that if that day were to ever come then it would be the worst of his life. For the name of his daughter or any of his sons to slip from the tongue of a Capitolite could surely only mean that one of them had been sent to this very city for a fate much worse than Dorian's: death.



VIOLA WARSAW // SKYLAR
(Female, 39)

Viola is a quietly religious woman. She likes to believe that her faith in God is not misplaced and that all things happen in accordance with the grace of His will. However, even with all the time that has passed, she still has a difficult time reconciling her beliefs with the fate of her husband. The loss of him resonates in the empty space between each of her heartbeats and manifests itself in a whisper of hope that maybe someday these wrongs will be set right and Dorian will be returned to her. Until that day, she has sworn to herself to tend to her children with all the kindness the world hasn't shown them — continually forgiving all of their sins mistakes, because she knows all too well that judgment is not hers to make.
