Krys was lying on the dock letting the sun dry his skin. It was slightly cool today and the water was cooler than he liked. After an hour his body had started to ache from the cold water so he hopped onto the dock and laid out in the sun to warm up. The sky was a vibrant shade of blue; it always seems brighter in the fall and winter than at any other time of the year. And the clouds seemed fluffier. Lying on the dock was almost like a past-time for Krys. People left him alone and he was free to dive and surface as often as he wanted. As long as he didn’t start diminishing in his ability to do his job, nobody did or said anything negative to him. Not like anyone had a negative thing to say to him. He was a very well-liked boy.
Almost everyone that he came into contact with-friends, coworker s, family, everyone loved him. But the feeling wasn’t one that he was capable of returning. And today, the emptiness he was harboring was stronger today. It was almost the anniversary of the day he had lost her. The day that his life had come to a violent and screeching halt. At first no one knew that he was hurting the year before but now, after seeing his actions, people knew that he wasn’t okay on the inside. The fact that it occurred when the Games were about to being was not a coincidence.
But Krys didn’t want to think about it-although he didn’t always have an option. He wanted to fight through it; he wanted to beat it down. He stood up from the dock and took his haul to the nearest market. After that, he ran. Just because he was a fantastic swimmer didn’t mean that he wasn’t just as amazing on land. He was incredibly fast and soon had left the market area and made it to the rural area and started running between the houses and up and down alleys. The wind stung his eyes; the slight chill of the autumn air was something his body protested violently. But he didn’t care because it only stung a little. As long as he kept running, he felt a little less hurt inside. It was almost like if he ran fast enough he could leave his depression behind.
He ran for over an hour, until he was sufficiently winded and sweaty. He turned a corner near his home and saw a group of his “friends” walking towards him. It wasn’t a bad thing, he did like them but he didn’t feel like dealing with them right now. And there were a few new additions to the group; some of his friends were holding hands with girls from their school. He hated seeing couples, and why today of all days? What did the universe have against him! He turned on his heel before they had a chance to see him and ran again. This time he ran to the edge of the town and hopped onto the roof of a small house that no one had lived in. He surveyed the people around him and spotted someone that he didn’t recognize right off the bat. It was another guy. Krys huffed and chuckled.
