Mm, okay, she thought, checking her fingernails for dirt. We're opposites.
And it was true, she knew, because she stole doughnuts from a stupid shop and he almost chickened out. He was a guy, she was not. Yaa was daring, and a moment ago he could hardly put a sentence together without being hesitant about it. He - Cedric - was a school-going, goody-two-shoes type, and she just didn't care about anything. Not about school, not about District Seven, not about Panem, not about her own life, and most definitely not about other people. Bunch of scumbags, those people. Actually, she realized, she wasn't quite an angel either. Perhaps she could blame her bias, but she felt more real than the rest of them, like by not caring she was being a true human. Yaa Valarro was honest, and the world was full of filthy rotten liars.
Still, the poor lonely stranger named Cedric didn't seem so bad, nor did he seem very lonely. She questioned the kind of life he led, going to school and conforming to nothingness, but she wasn't exactly a go-getter herself. She was just a lunatic girl who occasionally stole doughnuts from the shop adjacent to her parents' store and slept around and dreamed of a fashionable Capitol life.
Dream or not, she would never have that life. It struck her for a terrifying moment that she could end up on the street one day, begging people for food or worse. If her brother was gone, and her parents were gone, and all the lovely lonely strangers were gone, she would live quite the shitty life.
For a second she almost shook her head to push the ideas away, but realized that Cedric was probably waiting for her reply She wasn't sure what to say, all caught up in her own thoughts. Or perhaps the lonely stranger had the answer.
"Why do you go to school if there's no point? What do you want to do?" she asked, looking down, almost ashamed. What sort of person would she be if she wandered around and actually let people know what she was thinking?
