Kalina had sought to seek out more time with him that day, but as she had gone back to the room, he had fallen asleep. As she had peeked around the curtain, she could see his slumbering face and smiled. He looked sweet as he lay there, but without disturbing him, she left.
The walk back to her sister’s room went without notice. She kept playing out the conversations they carried on before she had left to get the nurse. A few things stuck in her mind. Like the way he said that about her hair. That she would still look gorgeous. Was he flirting with her, or was he teasing her, thinking of what kind of hairstyle she must have had. She didn’t get to fully explain that it was mostly her little sister’s doings as to why her hair would look bad, but it was to late to explain now. A few nurses passed by her, grinning as they noticed her dream-like face. It’s not something that you would see in a hospital. Usually fear and injury would be seen more than a goofy grin. She tried to hide it though.
There was also the matter of her using the word date. She hadn’t thought about it when she said it but the way he repeated it back to her made her wonder if he took it the wrong way, or if she said it the right way, but with his response, she could only agree with herself that it was in fact a good thing. In her sister’s room, she had finally woken up. The look on her face was pleasing and Lotus automatically noticed her far off gaze.
“Where have you been, thithy?” She asked, her young voice beaming. Kalina shook her head and smiled to her little sister. Sitting on her bed, she wrapped her in a hug.
“I met someone today. He’s really sweet. He got a boo-boo like you, and he was here to get it fixed by the doctors. I made a date with him.” She told her. She explained little bits of it as the little girl kept grinning. The bruise on her forehead where the stitches were kept her from jumping up and down in excitement, but it was ever present in her voice.
“Are you going to go thee him again tomorrow? Whath hith name?” Lotus asked through her missing front teeth. The grin was so perfect on her.
“His name is Tyler and I‘m not sure. You think I should?” Kalina asked. Her little sister nodded her head gently and yawned. Kalina laid her back down in the bed and covered her up. Winking to her sister, she agreed. “I think I shall, then. As long as you think it’s a good idea, and I think that you do.”
Their conversation didn’t go further than that. A few hours later, as the sun began to set, Kalina’s mother had relieved her of watching over her sister. She had left the hospital and walked home that night and returned the next morning, early. She was most excited to see if he was up for a visitor. She had woke up early just to make a thermos of coffee for the two of them. She had forgotten the coffee when she went to see him yesterday and in his present situation, she figured that a treat would uplifting for his spirits.
Upon entering the front door, she headed straight for the room where he was in last. Gently, she knocked on the door. Would he be awake or would he still be sleeping. She held the thermos close to her body, soaking up the heat that radiated from the thick metal as she awaited a sound. A snore. Anything.
