There is a slightly stunned silence as I watch her devour my spaghetti, repeatedly shoveling it in and discarding every pretense of manners and cutlery. While I'm flattered that she thinks my cooking this good, this definitely isn't the dining of the hungry, but of the starving. A small thought: Is she bulimic? that is quickly pushed away; she has nice teeth and fair skin. Plus, she's far too thin for any of that business. Any thought of her being anorexic is kicked out the window when I see another spoonful of pasta vanish down her throat. How long has it been since someone's fed her a proper meal?
Wordlessly I set down some juice next to her and lean back in amusement, watching the heap slowly (or not so slowly) disappear. My stomach mumbles in protest of having so much delicious smelling food and not tasting it, but it's shushed as my eyebrows steadily raise at her voracious appetite. I thought I had grossly overestimated what she would eat, but it seems not. About a quarter of the way in she seems to figure out what she's doing and she freezes, staring at me with the look of a deer caught in the headlights. An amused smile spreads over my face when she coughs in embarrassment and mumbles out something about the pasta being really good before digging back into her meal - with a little less feral swiftness than last time.
Eventually Penny finishes with record timing and stares at her reddened hands, evidently trying to come up with an explanation to her decidedly strange behaviour. "My... mo - dad is not a good cook?" I'm confused and she seems alarmed at the way she words the response, for she abruptly stands up and looks for the door. Jules... I have to go. Now." Wait, what? I start towards her when she bolts for the door, our feet making raindrop sounds against the hard wood. "Hey, wait!" I cry, and it seems that somebody has decided to take pity on me because there is a loud ripping noise, and the objects of her satchel tumble all across the hallway with enthusiastic bouncing.
In confusion I watch all the miscellaneous items roll to a stop, mentally taking stock of what I find. It seems that if you throw together a bunch of random objects, you'll have the basic concoction of Penny's bag. Buttons, pins, needles, a rock. Knife? When I bend down to retrieve a jar of some sort I almost drop it again when I see two stick eyes staring back out at me. A snail? Is that her pet or something?
A fluttering piece of paper lands on my foot and I retrieve it, smoothing it over with my thumb to see two smudged people, smiling out at the camera. It's well worn and faded, but the resemblance in what I can see is uncanny. They are definitely Penny's parents. What would she be doing with a picture of her parents - and an old photo, at that - in her bag? Yet as the final item comes to a stop with a solid thunk, I frown and go over to the strange object. It sits ugly on the floor, stark white against the dark paneling. Uncomprehending I heft the object into my arms and turn it a few times, realizing that it feels alot like rice. A glance at the label shows that yes, it is rice. Another, harder stare also shows that it's the exact same brand in our cellar. It doesn't take long to put two and two together.
From my crouched position I grind my teeth hard and glare up at her form. Her eyes are closed in something akin to anguish, but I don't care. Angrily, I stalk up towards her and forcefully jab a small finger into her chest. "You! I bring you here, give you respite from the rain, drink and food, and what do you do? You steal from me!" I'm positively seething and trying desperately to grab reigns on my temper so I take a few heavy breaths and pace where I am, still holding some of her possessions to make sure she stays put. Suddenly, something dawns on me and I look back at her, expression dark.
"Penny, you better start explaining. I don't think somebody who has a turkey waiting at home for her would steal a bag of rice, unless she has a severe case of kleptomania."
