When the fence seperating the forest and the town comes into sight, I nearly stumble with relief. Scrambling quickly over the chain fence and through a portion lacking barbed wire, I flash the forest the finger and melt gratefully into the shadows.
Malachi, yes? I'm positive I've heard that name before. Which means he must have a house somewhere. Walking wearily through the backalleys, I take my time trying to remember exactly where it is. The dirt road feels good under my feet as I trudge without an exact destination, coming to rest at a small, unassuming house. I hope this is it, I doubt I could walk much farther.
Knocking hard, I lean against the wall and wait. So far, I've reunited with a childhood friend, almost killed her, gotten shot twice and run like an idiot. If only I could see properly, then maybe I would have been able to see those stupid hunters by the deer.
Yeah, right. Let's give me night vision while we're at it.
Prodding experimentally at the arrows, I figure now is a good a time as any to remove them. Firmly gripping the point, I yank and it comes away relatively painlessly with a disgusting slurping noise. Wrinking my nose and flinching slightly I take the other one and repeat. But this one was deeper and I couldn't help but let out a yelp upon friction.
The noise must have drawn attention, because the next thing I know the door is finally opening and I give an exasperated glare, going out of my way to seem bitchy to mask the concern I feel over the redhaired girl.
"I see you made your way here successfully?"
