That song? How did he know about the song?
But either way, it seems like I don't really have a choice. So I begin to softly sing the haunting melody to myself. I hear voices, and loud ones. Then, the sound of someone being hit. More of those sounds.
I continue to sing the song, though, and it pulls me away. The lights are coming back, and I from. What am I doing behind a dumpster? What happened to Will?
The lights swirl around me, and I stand up, looking around in confusion.
And then I see Will on the ground. He looks like he's in a lot of pain. He's playing with some other, bigger guys.
"I think you might be hurting him," I say. "I think he wants you to stop."
They spin around and stare at me for a moment.
"There you are..." says one of them, taking a step towards me. He doesn't seem exactly right.
"Oh," I say, my eyebrows raised. "You... you were looking for me?"
That same one laughs and continues to walk towards me.
"If you were, I don't really know how I got here," I say in confusion.
Then I look at Will.
"Ummmm... if you don't mind, could you ask your friends to leave him alone?" I ask quietly.
His friends do stop, and also start coming towards me, smiling.
The first one who was looking for me has reached me now, and his breath stinks.
"Did you ever consider a breath mint?" I ask politely.
I don't think I said it politely enough, because suddenly, he presses both my shoulders up against the wall. My shoulder blades grind against the cold wall.
"That kinda hurts," I say. "Would you please stop?"
He just grins that mean grin, pressing me harder against the wall.
The lights have moved away from his hands. I frown as the swirl around the rest of me, but avoid him.
"They don't like you," I say curiously.
"Who doesn't like me?" he asks.
"Can't you see them? Maybe they'll grow to like you..." I say, watching the lights move away from him.
"Who are you talking about?" he demands.
"Oh, I'm sure they'll grow to like you. They'll come around... at least, for your sake I hope they do. I think they're angry that you're hurting me. Maybe you should stop," the distant look in my eyes seems to scare him.
He lets go of me, and I drop to the ground. He backs away slowly. "You're... you're crazy!"
"Am I?" I ask. "I never really considered that. But in all honesty, you're the one who looks kind of off. Are you feeling all right? It must be them. They must be what's making you feel bad."
"Crazy!" he repeats, shouting it this time.
Then he dashes away as fast as he can, which I have to admit is pretty fast.
The others stare at me. "I hope they like you better."
All at once they're backing away too. I frown in confusion. "What's wrong? Don't you wanna play with them?"
Before I can add about how friendly they are, the others are gone, following the first one's example.
"Well that was wierd," I murmur.
Then, I see Will on the ground.
He doesn't look too good. He's obviously in pain. "Hey Will, are you okay? They didn't hurt you, did they?" I ask, kneeling down beside him and putting a cool hand on his forehead. I don't think he's sick.
