Bryony didn't know what to do. The deer, with its large, warm brown eyes hadn't moved for a while. The red headed girl, with her arms currently occupied with a large wooden bow and arrow, thought quickly. She lowered her weapon.
Kill it, and risk charges against poaching or starve another night? I don't think my brother will last another day.
In less than a minute, she has raised the bow and shot the deer straight through the head. Meats not good there, anyway.
She carried the large animal on her back, knees rigid with exertion. She was tall, but her thin body couldn't carry this much weight. She walked through the town; nobody paid attention to her, the peacekeeper had passed out. Bryony could smell the strong scent of wine on his breath. She carried the animal all the way to her house, only having to stop once. She placed the deer on the ground with a low thud.
A tiny body collided with her legs. She looked down to see her little brother, Matthew. He was only three, too small to even count for a mouth. Still, he needed to eat. Her father, on the other hand was huge and his fist was as big as her brother's head.
He worked long hours, hunting as all others did in district nine. Though they lived in a city alive with wildlife to kill, all their meat went to the capitol.
"Nobody caught you." Her father said, a statement, not a question but she nodded anyway.
"I'm going out again. Eat and save the rest." Bryony said, leaving her hunting tools in the corner.
The city was boring but she hung out like any other day, looking for something to live for.
