Listen bit her lip and watched Gwen. Part of her wanted to go comfort the girl but... She was afraid that none of these people would trust her after her display with the Peacekeepers. She'd gone into complete career mode, a piece of herself built strictly for survival and some twisted desire to please her father. Not that that'd ever work. Still, that Listen was so completely different from her true self, cold and calculating. Not even hesitating to end a life. When she was being herself, just Listen, she couldn't even imagine doing something like that.
She sighed then, walking over to Patrius and Anna, leaving Gwen to her thoughts, though she still watched her out of the corner of her eye. "What happened?" she asked Anna, kneeling to examine her companion. She ran gentle fingers over his arms and legs and ribs, checking for broken bones. Then she ran them over his head. There was a good lump near the back and when she pulled her fingers away they brought blood with them. She frowned. "Really, what happened? Did he hit his head?" She bent over to look at it closer. "It doesn't look like he scraped it on anything, just that something hit him hard enough to split the skin."
She sighed, thinking. She had bandages in her bag, but she didn't want to use them unless it was an emergency. She kept looking, trying to decide how bad it was. Her verdict was that it was just bleeding a lot because it was his head. Heads bled at crazy levels, even from small cuts. She remembered her father telling her that, though he'd used it in reference to murder, of course. "Don't think that just because there is a lot of blood running off their skull you've one. Heads will gush from even the smallest wound." Listen shook her head at the memory.
She turned to look at Anna, glancing over to make sure Gwen was okay as she did so. "I think we should stay here, despite the bodies and the commotion of the gun shot. Anyone who comes along won't expect us to stay at the scene of the crime. Only a complete idiot would do that. And they won't expect idiots to have been able to escape the districts. We'll camp in the trees, so we don't have to build anything. Just a little bit of rope... You can tie yourself in place, and then you don't have to worry about falling out. Peacekeepers never look up, for some reason I've never been able to understand. And even if we move a bit, it'll be dark and there are plenty of creatures that move around the trees at night. We should be fine. I've even slept right above a forest Peacekeeper's camp before and gotten away with it."
That was true, too, though she'd even been amazed at the time. The whole night she'd barely slept a wink. She kept waiting for someone to look up and see her. She kept waiting to get caught. But it never happened, and here she was telling them the story. She sighed. "But if you think that's a bad idea..."
She left the thought open ended. She'd never been much of a leader. She was too timid. Even as she spoke to Anna her voice was that quiet one she could never escape. At least it wasn't shaking anymore.
