It’s hard just sitting still as we wait for the rains to come. The looming clouds in the distances reassure us that yes, there will be enough water for this crop, but are also not so silent warnings that we shouldn’t remain outside much longer. I don’t want to go in though…
Looking down at my cracked and rough hands I pull my face into a scowl. No wonder no one ever pays attention to me, I’m already broken on top of being a bastard. A peel of thunder rumbles in the distance reminding me that even in my silence I’m not alone. Looking down the row of trees I see the others climbing out of the branches and the white and stern boots of a peace keeper making their way down the path way. “Clear out. Storms comin’” He hollers over another clap of thunder. Normally if it is just raining we’d still have to stay in the trees, pulling out each individual fruit while we’re getting soaked to the bone, but once the lightening starts they’ll get us out and send us home. I guess risking killing us like that is too much, though shooting us in the head for eating what we grow is acceptable.
My footsteps are light on the dusty ground as we all hurry and scurry out of the orchard and down towards the town where our shanties are built. They’re grey and worn and most of them have holes big enough to fit your head through, though ours is stuff with more kids than should be allowed when you’re so poor you can’t even feed them. A large bolt of lightning sparks overhead and I let out a little squeal. It wasn’t that I was scared, more startled than anything. Muttering a few curses under my breath I keep walking hoping to get where I’m heading before it starts to rain, but as soon as the though crosses my mind the icy cold raindrops pelt down on us. People start running, scattering to their homes and shelter, but I keep my pace. My teeth chatter as I keep walking forward, I don’t even see any of my siblings but I know I’m headed the right way. After all, home is where the heart is.
