Immediately I find myself coloring slightly from the compliment. I feel my nerves tingle, but I hold them back. That is not how tonight is going to go. Slowly I look up at him. He looks nice as well. "Thank you. You look pretty handsome yourself. Of course, you always do," I say. It's not something I normally say; usually I'm pretty much business. He's different. I don't feel the need to keep proving myself. I can be a little more natural. It's nice. "Sorry I probably look a bit over dressed; this is the first time I've been asked anywhere without my family." Not really a glowing comment on my popularity, but that was alright.
I follow him inside the boat and set the gift down. "It really isn't much. Besides, you're the one sharing your food with me. I'm just happy you asked me here." My eyes roam around before they come back to rest on him. "I think it'll come in handy on your boat." I beam at him when he starts talking about the food. "No, I'm not picky. Don't worry; I'm sure that it will be delicious. I hope you didn't go to too much trouble though. It's just me. You've already done a lot." It was true; he did keep my hand from having an infection, and he'd asked me over. That's more than most. Of course, fish had been hard to come by lately, so I feel even more lucky that he's sharing something with me.
He's looking at me, and I'm unsure what exactly to do. My hands are in my lap, and I'm twisting them slightly. However, his comment makes me laugh. Immediately my tension is gone. "Oh they wanted to come, especially Hammil and Titus, but my mother talked them all out of it. Honestly I was going to sneak out. Harder in a dress, but I know how to get around." I smile at him. "Fortunately, only I know where you live. They don't." That was one thing that I had made sure of. The last thing I wanted was for them to come by unexpectedly just to "check up" on things.
The smell of the food hits me, and I close my eyes to inhale the fragrances. Everything smells fantastic. I open my eyes. "What is it? It smells amazing; I don't think I recognize it." It's definitely a new dish, and I wonder if it is from his own invention. As far as I can see, there was no reason for him to defend his food earlier. In fact, I'm sure if others knew how well he could cook, he'd become even more popular. "Do you have people over often?" I ask him curiously as I fiddle with my hair.
