It was beginning to look scary for quite a while now, with food being a rarity and scraps to sell slimming to that last necklace. Maybe was completely used to having nothing but at least her biological family held food, something almost worth the abuse. The small piece of gold laid right in front of the busted mirror as Maybe debated how to fill her hollow cheeks she was applying makeup to. Makeup was disappearing as well, which also brought the fear of another decision to make. Putting food in my new family's stomach is more important Maybe had to remember.
There was three options on how to fill the starving stomachs; ask Rainbow or another for a bit of their money from drug/prostitution selling, cave once again to do that job herself, or sell the last piece of jewelry she held to her name. As sad as it was the other's would most likely spend every cent on drugs before even returning home. Taking a second to hush the estimation was right as the abandon rundown home was completely silent. That left two to pick from and with a long look in the mirror Maybe knew she wasn't desperate enough to follow down the same career path as her own mother. Grabbing the gold, Maybe reassured herself with a smile in the mirror before exiting their home.
There was only one place to get a decent value for something that could of very well of been stolen, and Maybe knew the exact direction to The Hob. It probably wasn't the best idea of Maybe to go pawn gold alone on account debating with anyone but herself always ended in the other person winning. An entire second week of food could of been saved if one of the other family members joined Maybe, but at least it meant food. Ecstatic about the outcome Maybe felt as if a fest was in need especially with the growling stomachs that have been rumbling the house for a few days.
Food was certainly in order to save on account Maybe went a little to money happy. She wanted to make her first true meal tonight and wasn't going to allow anything to stop her. A fat rabbit, potatoes, a few veggies and bread would satisfy everyone Maybe thought as the money was counted onto the palm of her hand, bottle of wine for Rainbow and I to she added when a little more then predicted was added. It toke no time at all for Maybe to collect her items, as her excitement was pushing her along. Passing the small booth of makeup was difficult and Maybe had to stop to refresh on her low supply.
With a giant grin that spread from ear-to-ear Maybe was so happy to go home and surprise her new family with a filling meal...that was until everything was flipped upside down. It had been several weeks from encountering any of her biological family members, a sight that Maybe didn't want to see. The glimpse of her mother ruined Maybe's entire vision; as Maybe's heart began to race, complete body started to shake, and the unwanted mark on her lower-back burned. The bag of goodies tumbled to the floor and the young girl dashed behind the nearest hiding place possible. It toke several minutes before Maybe even shifted out of her frozen state, and then another to check if her mother had left.
Crawling to the bag of broken hopes Maybe had to fight tears from her goal being shattered. Sure there was still a bit of money left, enough to buy scraps of food for a week, but that was the only chance for an actual meal. With fear of her mother's return Maybe collected everything with potential to quickly split back home. The expensive wine had smashed into pieces ruining the veggies, meat, and potatoes. Only a loaf of bread laid untouched as to not get squished if put on the bottom of the bag.
The house was still empty by the time Maybe returned home, which was exactly what she needed on account she felt like a failure. Why'd I drop the bag? She couldn't help repeating in her head as she plumped down at the table and stuck the only piece of food in the middle. This was all the family had tonight and though it was better then nothing Maybe was so ashamed. The door opened and Maybe's head sprung up with curiosity on who it may be, clearing her face just in time for the person to walk through the kitchen door.
If only it'd had been baby Tears then Maybe could of easily faked a smile and moved past this disappointment. But no it was Rainbow, the one person that was able to know exactly what Maybe was feeling and thinking. With a gulp she wanted to at least attempt to hide her pain. "I managed to get some bread for tonight, are you hungry?" Maybe asked forcing a phony grin onto her face though her sorrow eyes told a whole different story.
