"Why did you say you would join then?" He knows exactly why I came. I know he knows. It's not possible that he doesn't know. I don't want to answer him at all. I glue my head to the ground and stare ashamed at the ground. How is it possible that he even dares asks that question? "You know exactly why" I whisper as a tear strolls down my face, as a sign of ashamedness.

His question bothers me. How can he think that was fun. I'm starting why I want the respect of someone as low as him. The answer pops up in my brain as if really came with a light bulb. he was family, not the best type, but still family and I wanted him to accept me. I know his question was sarcastic, but I just have to answer anyway "It was terrible"

A list of reasons go through my head. A list of reasons that shouldn't be needed. A list of reasons of why I should take the cigarette and reasons I shouldn't. I should take it because: I'll gain his respect, I'll show a little bit of toughness, he won't consider me a nun. Why I shouldn't take it: it's unhealthy, it's against my will, and yet again it's unhealthy. Yet I take the cigarette out of the box and say "Give me a lighter"

Part of me wonders why I let her stay here. I'll never know the answer. I knew she would be a coward. I knew she wouldn't actually go through with it even though she said she would, yet I let her try. I offered her a chance to try, but she turned it down. She is the coward I know her to be. She doesn't want to do anything to get in trouble. She fears what can happen, but I've stopped caring. It might bring my parents back home to me, and Hylla. I look around wishing Svenja would hurry up with her decisions.

I take a puff of the cigarette staring at the work I've done. I call it my masterpiece. I'm not done yet though. The show is only about to begin. I twirl the lighter in my hand before I feel something moving. "Give me a lighter." I'm caught completely off guard. Little Svenja is actually going to smoke a cigarette. I bet she can't finish the whole cigarette. She'll be coughing her head off. The thought of it makes me laugh. I remove my backpack from my shoulder as I pull the pack of cigarettes away from her. I remove my second lighter. "Here, don't lose it because I only have these two right now."

I hand her the lighter before I turn back to face my work. My masterpiece. The work that I've created all by myself. I take the cigarette and dust my ash off of it before I place it back in the pack. I'll finish it later. I have work to do. I twirl the lighter in my hand as I walk over to the trees I've just covered in toilet paper. I flick the lighter on and off smiling to myself. I reach the first tree. "This is going to look absolutely amazing. I can't wait for an audience to appear to watch the show." With that, I flick the lighter on as a flame dances to life. I place it on a strand of toilet paper, and the flame shimmers to life quickly consuming the tree.

The glow of the bright orange flames in the dark of night brings joy to me. I walk away from the tree and head back over to Svenja. "Would you like the honor of setting the other tree to fire?" I ask hoping she would do it. I don't want her to be a coward. She's stayed with me for this long, and I hope she might actually participate. That is unless she becomes a coward again. I laugh as the flame in the tree dances higher and higher into the air. I know it's only a matter of minutes before the family comes rushing out of the house to see what's going on. "Best make your decision quick as we are running out of time."

Svenja Cole

I took a puff of the cigarette and a disgusting taste exploded in my lungs. It tasted as bad as it smelled and it made me want to throw it up. As the bad taste decided to stay in my mouth I started to cough hysterically. My lungs felt like they were going to stop working, and I felt like coughing them out. Once I stopped I turned to Isaiah and asked him in-between weak coughs ” How are you able to inhale this constantly without dying or coughing you lungs out?”

My chest was pumping hard and I almost collapsed. I knew I couldn’t stop know, so I regretfully took another wife of it as Isaiah asked me if I would like to light the other tree on fire. For the first time in my life I was glad I was coughing, I didn’t want to answer that question. I rather would have stayed here coughing my head off. Now I was at the point were my chests hurt so much that my eyes started to tear up.

A few seconds past, but it felt like forever as the question lingered in the air. I knew Isaiah was getting tired of having to wait for long for me to actually do something. The cigarette on my side was starting to run out, which I was grateful for, and I inhaled it one last time, let out a few week coughs and a sigh of regret and said ”Fine, I’ll regretfully do it”

It surprises me when she takes the cigarette and starts smoking it. I want to congratulate her for taking the big step, but that's not something I do. I'm not going to congratulate the girl that was too afraid to toss toilet paper in the tree. It's really not that hard. All she had to do was climb the tree, throw the toilet paper then jump away. She starts coughing almost immediately after the first puff. She's still really weak. Her lungs aren't used to this. She'll get there if she hangs around with me. ” How are you able to inhale this constantly without dying or coughing you lungs out?” She asks between coughs. I chuckle silently as I watch her cough and gasp for air. I knew it was only a matter of time before she started. I was like this the first cigarette the first time I smoked, but I'm over it now. I'm stronger than she is.

"Well, I've been smoking much longer than you have. I inhale the smoke into my lungs allowing it to fill me. It gives me a rush that I need. There isn't anything wrong with it." My voice is still harsh and cold. I don't mean for it to be, but it is. I have trouble controlling myself when I'm around her or any of the Coles. I don't hate them. I really don't, but I do hate them. Svenja has parents. She has parents that didn't just disappear on her. My parents left me and Hylla. They left us alone, and I hate them for it. Svenja is my cousin. She doesn't understand me. She'll never understand me. She'll never understand the hatred I have towards her family.

I look over at the tree that's still dancing to life in flames. It's amazing how much fire and bring the evening to life. ”Fine, I’ll regretfully do it” I can still hear the wheezing in her voice from the cigarette as she snaps she'll do it. She'll regretfully do it. I hold the lighter out to her so she can light the other tree on fire. It'll be able to dance to life around the other tree. It'll be a miniature show for us. "Go ahead then. Just make it quick before the neighborhood wakes up to the dancing flames. I'm sure peacekeepers will be here soon." I remind her quickly. "Just light it the we can slink back into the shadows. Better yet, you can slink back into the shadows. I will wait for the owners of this house to wake up."

Svenja Cole

My lungs are weak that's all. It still hurts like hell even though I'm done with that disgusting piece of trash. It made you want to faint or worse die. Yes, it made me want to tear up and die from the inhalation of the chemicals and whatnot. I couldn't stand it. I threw the cigarette, that was almost finished away. Though the pain didn't stop, it kept on going and going. I think this was god or any other supreme being giving me my punishment telling me, to go back to being good little Svenja.

He tells me what to do, and is finally telling me to do something I won't have to try, wake up the neighborhood. The part about the peacekeepers didn't exactly excite me, but at least I would have it over with, no more cowering and I could finally go back to sleep.

I took the lighter from hi hands and took slow cautious steps. I wasn't sure if I should climb the tree and jump down or just place the lighter there. I decided to climb and probably end up with a broken bone or something. I slowly found holes for my hands and feet. I climbed up carefully and then lit one branch on fire. I didn't know what I was thinking I almost couldn't jump down as the flames danced and coiled around the tree.

I jumped down just in time and then remembered about waking up the neighborhood. so I yelled "Heyy District 1, come and watch the show! with that I ran back into the shadows with tears in my eyes thinking what have i done?

She takes the lighter from my hand and walks over towards the tree. Instead of setting the toilet paper on fire from standing on the ground, she decides to climb the tree. I start laughing uncontrollably because she's so stupid. She's not smart enough to realize the danger she's putting herself into, but she can't be that smart either because she followed me here and agreed to light this tree on fire knowing the consequences. I'm not afraid to be caught. I'm not afraid of being arrested, but I know she'll break if she's arrested. I know deep down she doesn't have what it takes. I doubt I'll be nice enough to take all the blame for her. I might because this was my idea. As of right now, I have every reason to state that I did it. This was all me.

I watch the flames on the trees dance to life. I can feel the excitement inside me growing larger with each second. This is the moment of truth. The moment I've been waiting for. It would only be better if the owners of the house would walk out right now. I would show them what I'm capable of. I'll show them what I did. I'll show them I'm not a nice kid they expect me to be. If they think I'm good, they have another thing coming. "Heyy District 1, come and watch the show!" She screamed before running away. She's wanting to get herself arrested. She's wanting everyone to see what she did because it was a females voice that screamed. I crack my neck and stare at her.

"What the hell are you playing at?" I hiss at her. "Are you wanting to get arrested? I think you are because screaming like that is a good way for it to happen, Svenja. I was going to take the blame for you, and let you go home and get away from it, not now. You deserve to be caught. Run while you can because as soon as I catch you, you're dead. I will kill you!" I scream as loud as I can knowing that everyone that's around will hear her name. Everyone will know that innocent little Svenja isn't so innocent anymore. I turn towards her and take off running in her direction with fire glowing in my eyes.

Svenja Cole

His words hit me like an Iron fist to my face. He made it clear that he wanted to see me dead. My blue eyes are drowning in tears, my soul is trying to fight back, but it can't. The burst out, I guess I didn't have much of a choice than to run. He was going to kill me, that's how I was going to die? By the hands of my own family. Was this worse than dying in the bloodbath in the games? I didn't want to die, because after tonight I know I was going to hell. At least thats were people who have done bad things go to.

I take off running as hard as I can. Fast through tear drops that felt bigger than rain. My run isn't a quiet one, you could probably here my running like a psychopathic horse on the loose. Not in rhythm, just running forever straight. Unfortunately there was no forever here, the ally I ran into was blocked by a large stone wall, which will be the last thing I ever have seen. I curl up in a corner and bring my knees to my eyes and sob. I keep on sobbing and waiting, waiting for him to come and put an end to my misery.

She takes off running away from me causing the anger I'm feeling to surge through my veins giving me the adrenaline I need to keep running after her. I'm angry at her for not giving me the chance to watch the flames dancing on the tree. I didn't get to watch the owners of the house walk out to see their trees on fire. I missed it because of her. She ruined my plans. She always ruins my plans. She ruins everything. I allow my mind to focus on the things that makes me angry at her so I can catch her. Will I kill her? Probably not, but I could if I knew I could get away with it.

I run after her as fast as my legs can carry me. I keep my eyes focused on her so I can follow her every step making sure I don't lose her. My heart flip flops under my chest. I can hear the sounds of my feet hitting the ground as I run. I throw the cigarette I was smoking as I run after her. I need to quit smoking if I want to run after people. My lungs scream as they expand and collapse with each breath I take. I look behind me. I can still see the faint light of the flames dancing in the trees, and it brings a smile to my face. I face forward again in time to spot Svenja running into an alley.

Bad decision. I think to myself. I know most of the back alleys dead end. I've figured that out from all my time of roaming the streets at night. I turn the corner as I slow my pace down to a walk. I walk to the end of the alley and spot little Svenja curled up in a ball in the corner. Her knees are brought to her face. I can tell by looking at her she's scared, and it only causes the smile on my face to grow bigger. "Look what we have hear." I smirk. "I don't know what you were thinking, but you ruined it. You ruined my plans, and now you must pay." I walk over to her causing my shadow to conceal her from the light.

The tears stream down my face, and then onto my knees. it seems as if I could create a whole river out of tears of regret and self hate. The moon is like the only light that the world can give me now, the only light from this dark river of everything I used to be. I'm not sure if he is going to kill me, but I will have to wait and see what happens. I won't give him the pleasure of killing me. If I'm going to die tonight, then it will be by my own hands.

When the light fades and turns into complete darkness, from his shadow. I slowly lift my head up. My eyes stained from all the tears, and my once blue eyes encircled from red. He speaks and I listen, just like I have always had. Nothing seems to have changed, and yet everything did. I can feel it in the air. "Well let me tell you one thing, I'm not going to give you the pleasure of killing me. If you try then I will just kill myself"

I stare at her waiting for her to move. All I need her to do is move a certain way, and I'll be able to make her wish she never messed with me. I'll make her wish she never followed me because I didn't get to watch the show. I didn't get to watch the owner of the house come running out to see what I did. I wanted to hear the screams the filled the air when they walked out to see two of their lovely trees burning. All because Svenja came with me. She's the reason my plan was ruined. It's her fault not mine. I can feel the anger surging through my veins with each heart beat. I can feel the veins bulging in my face as my blood pressure rises from the stress. I can feel my head throbbing in pain, but I don't back down. I can't back down. I refuse to.

"Well let me tell you one thing, I'm not going to give you the pleasure of killing me. If you try then I will just kill myself" This is perfect. She really thinks I'll kill her. I would kill her if I knew I could get away with it, but I refuse to give her the satisfaction of killing herself. I crack my neck and look at her. My teeth gritted from the anger I'm feeling. My brain feels like it's being split in two. It's screaming at me. Kill her! No don't kill her! Don't let her kill herself! She's your cousin! Kill her! It all becomes confusing. I hate when the confusion settles over my mind. It's a war that never ends. It's a war that my body is fighting. A war that only I can chose the ending to. A war of seeing Svenja die, or a war to see Svenja live.

"Svenja, you can't kill yourself. You just can't! You know you can't! It will only make problems worse!" My cold, harsh voice raises to a yell bouncing off the walls surrounding the alley. I raise my gaze from her trying to hide the scoff on my face. "Do you think I want to tell your mom you killed yourself right in front of me, and I didn't do a damn thing to try to stop you? No, I don't! I don't want to explain to her that you ended your life because of a threat I made towards you! You ruined my plans, and I'm not going to let you end your life right in front of me." My voice is calmer as I finish what I'm saying. I can't kill her because they accepted me into their house when I had nowhere else to go. They accepted me and Hylla. I take a deep breath and continue to stare at her. "Don't you ever threaten to take your own life in front of me again because I'll just end it. It's not a threat. That's a promise."
