”Yes.”
Annie’s response was confirmed when gravity drew Historia’s limp body to the floor, her head nestling neatly into Annie’s lap. Armin couldn’t help but broaden his smile – it was one of the cutest things he’d ever seen, and he would never admit that out loud, wasted or sober. Must be comfortable, he thought as the smaller girl draped her arms over Annie’s hips. And warm. His mind was drifting off to a very dangerous tangent, and he quickly snagged the bottle he had abandoned just moments ago to gulp the rest of the whiskey, willing the fire to singe any impure thoughts. He couldn’t remember when they had decided to abandon glasses for the bottles themselves, but he did realize that he needed to cease. He didn’t want to end up drinking himself sick.
”Hey Armin.” Annie’s voice chimed above the other girl’s soft breaths and dragged him away from his mental distractions. He set the empty bottle down in front of his lap and tapped his fingers against the glass. ”Do you think I’m pretty?” He was wasted, but not so far gone that he could hallucinate a question like that slipping past Annie’s lips. Yes, you’re beautiful, intimidatingly so. He felt heat involuntarily rushing to his cheeks. When they first met he may or may not have harbored a bit of a teenage crush on her, but he had learned quickly that she was so far out of his league that there was no reason to even bother with feelings of that nature. So it faded, or at least he hoped it had, and he instead focused on building a friendship with her.
Times have changed, he supposed. He had adjusted to viewing her as a friend and former colleague, especially now that she was a member of the Capitol Police and hardly ever seen by anybody in Levi’s squad. Still, it didn’t make her any less distracting to look at. He would be honest with her, of course, but he would also play it safe. ”Yes.” He managed a sheepish smile. ”I think you’re very pretty.” He was definitely new to complimenting people like this. He could easily tell her how strong she was, how brave she was, how gifted she was and how pleasant she was to talk to, but anything beyond that was foreign territory. He wasn’t sure if he felt embarrassed about it or not. Make up your mind, alcohol. Right, because the booze was to blame for everything. Don’t be silly.
”Er, if you don’t mind me asking..” he piped up, speaking against his better judgment. It was currently inhibited by his own intoxication. ”Is there any chance that I..” His eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he struggled to translate his scrambled thoughts into a coherent question. ”..that anything about me is..” Ripred Armin, spit it out, what is wrong with you? ”..desirable?”
Well, he supposed there were worst ways to get his point across. His mind had once again run off on another tangent. Complimenting Annie was easy because there was plenty to admire, especially when he recalled their first meeting and his initial impressions of her. But was there anything special about him? He didn’t truly want to place that burden on Annie, but he was curious. Did he have any prominent characteristics that an average human being might admire? His friends always insisted that he was kind and intelligent, but how practical was that in the field? Impressive academic scores wouldn’t save any lives, and his feeble arms could hardly kill a mutt. In general he was a pretty meager addition to the squad, acting more as a crutch of moral support rather than a true soldier.
There was still a chance that he was wrong, though. He always had difficulty weighing the positives and negatives about himself. Annie could easily say yes, that there was something admirable about him worth mentioning. That might make him feel a bit more confident in himself. She could easily disregard him, which was fine. He didn’t want to make her uncomfortable by asking stupid questions. She could also say no, and that was fine too. That was what he anticipated from the very beginning. At least if the truth is harsh, I can expect it.
