As she entered the cornucopia, the heat hit her back like a tennis racket, and she ignored it and arrived at where the weapons were stored. Her first priority was to grab a weapon. She saw people arriving, some after her, some before her. She was in a comfortable position. Not wanting to waste any time, she grabbed the closest thing to her that felt like home – a bunch of horseshoes. She remembered the horses they had in special stables at her farm back home. She named one of them Cindy, like her cow Mindy, but different. She was a beautiful horse, a sleek brown coat and chocolate coloured eyes. Cindy hadn’t been used for slaughtering, but for riding. Once Mam let Marianne on Cindy for a bit, and Marianne clutched onto her mane and let her trot her around the farm. She took the opportunity to look at some of the pigs and cows, and give them names along the way. Silly, childish names, but names. And by just naming an animal you grew a closer connection with them. Marianne wondered if there were horses in this arena. Before picking up the horseshoe, she readied her fists, or knees, or feet…she didn’t know what part of her body she was using to attack this tribute, she was just using one of them. Her whole body was numb and she could only feel her own heartbeat and the heat on her back. Squinting to distract her eyes from the sun, she lashed out at the other tribute.
