MATTHEW DFUNHAM
Another week is finally over at the academy, almost our last one here. Some of my mates have already gotten their badge but our group awaits the final test. On top of that I’m three points short, even if I make that test. The captain has give me the advice to brush up on my skills in case they’ll throw another surprise test at me but they haven’t decided whether they will have me redo the whole course or give me this extra test. My mind is set on the latter. I don’t think I’ll go through this whole shit bootcamp again if they won’t let me pass. I mean I’d really like to become a peace keeper to have an option under my belt but I don’t want to start from scratch.
Around me the others are packing their bags to bring home their dirty clothes and bring back clean ones. Most of them are chatting away excited about the upcoming weekend whereas I know I need to stay and study instead of doing what I really desire: See my girl friend, spend some quality time and just be with her and no tasks.
Yet I wander down the corridor to the payphone sighing heavily and insert some coins. Of course I know her number without thinking twice. The ringing puts some stress on my nerves but when she finally picks up I try to sound as normal as I can.
“Hey Kyanite. It’s me. Everybody’s packing up to catch the bus right now but I don’t think I can make it this weekend. The Captain told me that they might give me another test because I’m still a few points short. Listen, I know this sucks but I’d better train and study.”
That’s all I can tell her right now. So I pause and hold my breath so she can give me an answer.
“I can always see you in a week. The course will be done then.”
The wall feels cold and hard agains my back because I’m pushing against it so hard without even noticing it and give the kid in line behind me a hard stare and a wave to let him know to come back later to use the phone.
