Despite how unbelievable it may seem, Connie Springer is anything but the collected and brave person he tried to portray himself as. Throughout the allotted period of getting your shit together Captain Levi gave them, he sat crouched by a tree generally isolated, staring at the ground and focusing on anything but his shaking wrists. Missions weren't his forte, and tranquility neither, since a kid he's always been an energetic mess, but how he ever got top ten in his class was beyond his theories. It was probably a fluke or something, maybe, since he never really seemed able to focus on the plans at hand; always more focused on being unfocused than actually knowing what the hell he was supposed to be doing.

There was minutes of murmurs and excessive planning, but all Connie really knew was to follow Eren and Captain Levi and to not doing anything too stupid. "Me, Connie Springer? Stupid? Pfft," he whispered to himself, fingers pecking and pulling into the soft dirt while shifting through for the prettiest rock possible. It was something that reminded him of his siblings back in district ten, exchanging and selling shiny objects between each other like merchants. There was nothing really to do with these rocks now, as a peacekepper he made actual money of course, worth wayyy more than a couple of dumb stones, but it was the idea behind them mostly.

Sasha would probably appreciate them though, she always seemed to like those simple things like sunday morning marathons and fun sized hot chips and the Connie Springers of the world. As he pocketed the handful of rocks, he chuckled to himself feeling the exhale on the back of his hand. "I bet she'd like a dog too," probably a giant dog with more hair on its head than Connie at least. The more he thought of the prospect of actually adopting a dog, the more he agreed it had to be big, huge. One of those dogs that knocked over kids with their excitement but in a cute way, and the kids only laughed because look at this big dog.

His apartment probably wouldn't allow for a dog bigger than two Captain-Levi-shoes stacked on top of each other though, which calmed in a way once he realized that he probably would be a terrible dog owner. Maybe he just needed a fish, or something smaller to begin, he didn't know much about supporting anything other than himself. That's why missions were terrifying, how could he save somebody if he could barely live himself? These people around him, his friends, put their trust in his hands, and he couldn't shrug that off if he they were injured under his aid.

The thought made him panic.

Nonono, he breathed to himself, in out, in out, these people are better than me, they'll be okay. Yeah. It was somewhat reassuring, knowing that he was the bottom of their squad, because most likely the only person to take a hit these missions would be him, and Connie Springer could take a hit, better him than the others. He breathed, in out, in out, where was all this going? After the handful of rocks and minutes, he was fully caught up in his own antics that watching Mikasa round up her crew caught him off guard. Were they starting already? Somehow he managed to get more shit untogether in the time his captain gave than he had beforehand, or at least he had began realizing how little he knew about what the hell was going on.

One or the other.

A stroke through his hair/scalp later, he stood up from his digging site to watch Eren with the most I-totally-know-what-exactly-is-going-on-right-now-mhm face he could muster, waiting for any sign of if he should go join his cavalry or not. Hopefully surely, he'd end up rambling about the mission eventually when they grouped up and from whatever he said, Connie could just piece together whatever he definitely already knew.
