The beast fell or at least one of them did. Leon was still injured and it wasn't either of them that had done a killing blow. May bit her lip and looked over to the two others. Jacinda looked hurt and Siren looked hurt as well. She looked to Leon and then started running before everyone else did. The other snake was pissed and if she knew anything about survival it was to run when you pissed off a creature. For instance she knew when to run away. It seemed that for most of her life that was exactly what she was doing. It dawned on her as she ran to scout ahead of the group that it was going to be the thing that saved their life. However, there were things that one had to fight for. The lives of those around her until they made it to the top was exactly what she'd fight for.

It wasn't until she looked down at the knife in her hand that she nearly stopped running. The others were coming up behind her or at least she prayed that's what they were doing. She couldn't hear them at the moment but she would help heal anyone who needed it when they got the hell out of the area. She took a deep breath to keep herself running. The blood of her nightmares coming back and trying to stop her in her tracks. Safety first and she would deal with it later. Except that all she was seeing was blood. The sand was no longer sand and you psyche wouldn't be able to hold for much longer. The arena was going to break and she couldn't let it do that. She couldn't let it happen right now.

A voice entered her head. "May it will be alright. You can shut it off. You can become numb even to the blood. I know you can." She spoke to the voice outloud. "I...I'm scared Bryce, I'm scared to turn it all off. I'm afraid of what I'll become if I do." "You will always the be the little broken girl I grew up with May. You can do this. No matter what you do you will still be you and you can heal." Tears began to fall and the sixteen year old girl looked back for her friends. Not caring if they saw her like this. If it made her weak so be it. She would flip the switch when she was ready. As soon as she slowed just a little she felt the pain. So she pressed on before she decided she was far enough away to use anything on herself.

i'm a little bit hopeful & a little bit calm

It's time to go, time to run; one of the nightmarish snakes has fallen, both oversized heads twitching in a manner that could be almost comical but is only horrific to Leon (more and more red staining the blank sheet he imagines is his life, any remaining innocence metaphorically bleeding white puddles around his child-sized feet, child-eyes growing older and older as he meets his gaze in a mirror he can only imagine). The wicked gleam of his knife ought to have been muted by the dark blood that now stains the metal, but looking at it now only makes it seem so much worse. It thrives on the pain the hurt of others.

But Leon was not the one who dealt the killing blow; Siren's wild thrust could have pierced the... thing right through the eye into its brain (if it even has one, but it looks less animal with unnaturaldifferentweirdwrongwrongwrong rage-clear eyes and fangs tall enough to pierce through more than half of Leon himself; its very image was made to be for nightmares in the same style as its blood was food for their steel). Even if it didn't, the muttation is dead, and that's all that really matters.

Isn't it?

"We have to go," Leon calls over the roar of the second snake, his eyes fixed on its ivory fangs. It looks mad enough to spit, and right now Leon wouldn't doubt that it can. "It's mad. Run, run!" His cry may have been swallowed by the loudness of the snake's movement, the ground around them rumbling with its fury. Leon doesn't stay to find out what is going to happen (doesn't want to know doesn't ever want to know); sparing a quick glance for his allies (get safe get out you don't owe them anything but he does) Leon ducks around the giant snake's bared fangs to safety (freedom).

It's later - with his chest heaving from exertion, his hands (trembling) clenched from the injuries he's received, snake blood thickly coating his skin, the memory of not-animal-not-human eyes of the muttation - that he realizes that the arena is the Capitol's playground packed full with every possible nightmare a child could have.

And...

And if I want to live...

I have to be worse.

When the first, and more injured, snake attacked Leon she had snarled and attacked it, landing a blow that she thought might have pushed it over the brink. Sure enough, the large beast crashed down and lay still. It was an exhilarating feeling to know she had been the cause of its demise - especially after it had attacked Leon, and May too she guessed - and she beamed. She hardly had time to sneer at it, though, when she felt jaws close around her left leg, those painful fangs burying into her flesh and wrenching. It was then she was especially grateful for the armour her bubble boy had sent, and it didn't take too much of an effort to pull her leg free of the ruined shin guard.

Groaning as the injury inevitably stung, she searched for Leon. He hadn't been attacked by the snake this time, but he still looked like he'd been thrown off a cliff. His arm was bleeding pretty heavily and he had a torn spot on his thigh that looked to be oozing blood slowly. Mostly he just looked really dishevelled. It was time for them to get out of here. At least one of the monsters are dead. She tried to catch Leon's gaze to tell him they should leave. If the others have sense they'll follow. If not then I'd rather not waste my time on them. Leon's shouts showed her that at least he agreed, though she had no idea if the others would follow. It didn't matter, she had to leave whatever they did.

It was a tough choice, cruel in some eyes, but she wasn't about to look after the skins of people and risk her life. It was bad enough she was missing a thumb - the bleeding still not having stopped - she didn't want to lose any more parts. See you, assholes. She spat at the body of the dead snake and saluted the live one before turning and running. Even as she fled she felt pain in her leg, it might have a nasty bruise but at least it was still attached. She had noticed the jaws snapping shut where her hand had been and thanked Ripred she had moved fast enough to avoid them, she would have surely lost at least part of her hand if she hadn't.

Far away from the fight and her heart still pounded. She went straight over to Leon - having kept near him the whole time and nearly collapsed to the ground. "We need to patch ourselves up." She looked around to catch sight of the other two, smiling despite herself to see that they had made it away. "C'mon everyone, I'll help if you need it." Leon, especially, seemed like the type to have spent more time learning how to fight than how to heal. She only had as much experience as she did because Ray usually ended up getting injured during his training and someone had to take care of him. For a moment she closed her eyes and pictured the faces of her brothers, first Ray then Reef, before a third face rose in her mind and she smiled. Whenever she thought of his she couldn't help but smile, that tall bubble boy.

Thank you, bubble boy.

My heart skips a beat when the mutts fall to the ground. My allies delivered the final blow, and I want to thank them, but they bolt as soon as my lips begin to form the word. And not wanting to risk that the mutts were just barely hanging off the brink of death and still alive, I run after my allies.

And I don't look back at the lives we just stole. The mutts' lives were not as precious as a tribute's, but no living thing deserves death, not even something as evil as the Capitol's mutts. Just like us, the mutts didn't ask to be put here, they didn't ask to be brought into this world. But they don't have a choice.

But I do, Leon does, May does, Siren does . . . every tribute in this Arena has a choice. The choice is not one that most of us favor, but at least our fate is not set in stone. It's kill or be killed, and I find myself leaning towards kill. When I do start thinking about killing another child's life to save my own, I think, What makes me more worthy of living than them?

I can never find an answer.
