"Teach Matthew the voices." I repeat Vy's words to her daughter, because I have no idea how to read a book to a little kid. Somehow that has been reased from my memory or it simply never happened with only my pragmatic father around.
Brooklyn does her best impression of an allegator and a princess. I'm sure I sound like a complete fool when I roar like a mean biest while reading the part of the allegator but even more so when my voice becomes his and sweet as it's the princess' turn.
Her giggles reward me for making a complete fool out of myself and for some reason that makes me smile, too, no matter how stupid I feel.
"You like that?" I hold out my hand for a high five but the girl has no idea what to do with it and start playing with my fingers. "That's a high five, girl. Has noone ever taught you that? look." I take her little hand and direct it towards mine.
She understands what I want so we repeat it a few times, once this hand, once the other until we're both so riled up that she jumps onto my lap to clap bot of her hands against mine.
I flinch a little because having her this close makes me tense but I let her stay where she is.
That is until she gets so excited that she throws her head back against my chest which makes me wince. "Ouch, Brooklyn, no head butting." I lift her off my lap again and grab the book to calm the excited little rascal down again but she starts bouncing up and down the room.
A heavy sigh escapes me as I get up again and grab her ball when I notice Vy in the doorway.
"Okay, how much have you seen?"
I raise the ball and threaten to throw it at her.
"You will never ever say a word to anyone, understood?" I'm referring to my princess impression.
