She let out a long sigh as she closed the door behind her. She was back in District 5 after having helped in District 10 and meeting the young man who survived when Sundra could not. It had been a stressful and tense few months, but Europa was determined to resume her life in District 5 and essentially move on. She didn’t have to work that day—the Blackwaters had given her the time off—and Europa wanted to do something worthwhile with her time off so she headed into town to take her mind off of troubling things.
It’s Tuesday, she mused as she followed the beaten path that lead past some of the oil refineries. It was a while since she last spent her Tuesday sitting on the grass, laughing and smiling and crying, but she had accepted that it was time to believe that there could be more to life than the people who had left her. For one, Io had survived yet another reaping and that was something to celebrate. But she keeps crawling closer to 18 and it won’t be until that year that I know she’s really safe. She knew her parents had the same worry, their eyes glancing at the calendar to see how many more days left until the next reaping. The curse isn’t real. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here either.
But the curse was the least of her worries as she heard a loud noise coming from the center of the town. Let’s check it out! was what a thirteen-year-old Storm would say as he held her eight-year-old hand and pulled her along towards the commotion. She would have gladly went with him because Storm is strong, he will protect me. Even if Storm wasn’t there, the younger, curious part of her wanted to know what was happening so she pushed past the crowd until it was so thick that she couldn’t move any closer. She bit her lip, going onto her toes but couldn’t see much more than some skin being flailed into the air every now and then. Europa pushed sideways, hoping she would be able to find a weak point for her to push past. But as arms started crowding around her and the pressure of people’s bodies kept pressing into her, she knew it was futile and pushed her way out.
It wasn’t until she broke through the outer ring that she was able to breathe again. Her eyes widened as she patted herself down to make sure all of her belongings were with her. If someone had stolen something, it must have been small and insignificant as she found everything she remembered bringing with her. Still determined to know what was happening, she turned to someone who was standing around and asked, “Do you know what’s going on there? I couldn’t see anything.”
