Matthew was making it irritatingly more and more difficult to stay angry; Brody had been expecting some loud shouting match potentially devolving to fists, after getting an idea what his former recruit's temper was like. The last thing he had expected was to hear Matthew admit that he was right. On the one hand, it was satisfying to have the kid see things his way, but on the other... His father had always said that holding onto anger was like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die, but goddammit if Brody didn't still want to vent.
"Torturing people until they tell you what you want to hear, no matter if it's true." Matthew started, and immediately Brody stiffened; he hadn't the foggiest idea what his job was really like. "Maybe it's really better than I'm out because I'm not so sure anymore that PKs are really the good guys."
Brody's anger ran cold.
"Until they tell me the right answer." Brody growled, "Or to keep their silence. Eiten Ruze was going to sing like a canary if anyone had gotten to him before I did; being the 'bad guy'," Brody made air quotes with his hands, "Is the reason you're alive right now."
That wasn't all of it, but Brody wasn't about to defend himself to Matthew who was making broad, bold assumptions about the very limited perspective he'd gotten of the Peacekeepers. Brody had brought in criminals ranging from the common thief to pedophiles and murderers, and been given the daunting task of working his way through the twisted machinations of their minds and sort through mazes of psychosis to find the information they needed. And he was unfortunately aware of what it had done to him; Brody couldn't pinpoint the how or the where, but he knew that shift in personality when he was angry enough hadn't been present before he'd been placed in interrogations.
Stare into the abyss, and the abyss stares back.
It only took one look from Matthew about Ruze to have Brody laughing bitterly.
"What, did you honestly believe Eiten Ruze didn't talk out of the goodness of his heart?" He scoffed, "Thought maybe he cared about his daughter or future grandchild? He was ready to throw all of you under the bus, go home and sleep soundly on it."
