The sun was nice and warm even though it was a fall day. It shone through the colorful leafs on the trees illuminating them in vibrant colors.
Walking next to my girl friend I felt something like butterflies in my stomach. I was feeling better again and so was she. By now, if you looked closely enough, there was a tiny bump showing on her stomach.
With my arm around her we made it to one of the stores in town to actually buy a few baby things. It was a second hand place that offered good used clothing.
About an hour later after my break we had to part ways so we said our good byes and she made her way back home while I walked back to work.
When I arrived at the company the young red haired receptionist immediately called me over to her desk handing me a note .
“There was a call for you, Mr. Dunham.”
I’ll never get used to being called Mister.
She handed me a piece of paper, which I read with interest because calls for me were rare.
“Corporal O’Rourke of the peace keepers called. He said Jins Revenue escaped. Be careful.”
She searches my face while I read the note. “He said you waould know what that means.”
Even before she finishes her sentence I feel like the floor just dropped out underneath my feet and a jolt of adrenaline alerts every fibre of my body as my eyes fall on the name JINS ESCAPED.
“Fuck.” I whisper and I already make a run for the door.
“Tell my father I had to go.”
“But why?” She calls after me with her hands on her hips but I’m already halfway across the parking lot.
As fast as my feet will carry me I run down every street, every block knowing very well that Kyanite is on her way home, where the man who tried to strangle her might be hiding in some dark corner to finish what he started. I completely forget the fact that he also wanted to end my life because all I can think of is my girl and our baby.
The screeching of tires alerts me of the car that almost hit me when I sprinted across one of the larger streets but without even looking I continue my path.
