By the time I reach the old farm house that Faith resides in I'm beyond exhausted. Not enough to turn around and give up though. I need to know why my personal red head never came back after taking such good care of me and my family. It's not like her to stay away fro so long and not even send a note. I need to know for sure that she's okay, so I slowly advance to the porch and knock on the door.
What her step mother, who opens the door of all people, tells me almost knocks me off my one good foot.
"Jack. "What are you doing here? Faith said she...That she broke up with you. Don't say you came here to win her back?"
"What?" My brows shoot up insecurly. Did Faith really decide that she wanted to break up with me and not work up the courage to tell me yet? "After all that happened?"
Briefly I check the woman's expression but I can tell that her compassion is fake.
"She's not worth it hun. You can do much better."
"Can I speak to her, please?" I demand because all this seems so wrong. I need to know why she would break up with me but her step mother denies me entry to her home and her fathers voice in the back ground sounds angry enough for me to back away from the door.
"Please tell her I came by." I studder before I leave in complete confusion.
I'm not melting down yet though because something about this all seems off.
Not long after my suspicion gets confirmed as her little sister catches up with me.
"Jack!"
I stop holding on tight to the crutch because my hands threaten to shake if I don't. I'm upset, that's right.
"She's lying! Mom and Dad won't let Faith leave her room, they locked it to!"
"What?" I look at her in disbelieve and then my eyes shoot up to the window of her room. Is she really locked up up there?
"Are you sure about this?" I bite my lip at so much cruelty of parents, who just lied to my face.
I trust the little girl though.
"Listen. Go up to her room and tell her to look outside. I'll be waiting down here, okay?"
She nods her curly head and sneaks away.
So I step into the shadow of one of the trees under her window and wait until I can see light in her room.
