"I didn't care - I'd finally f o u g h t b a c k."

The fog suddenly cleared as the last guy fled. Everything was all at once still and right then I thought I might faint. I looked to the whip in my hand, the nine strips of leather were spattered with blood and I could feel blisters starting to form on my palm. I had gone after people like it was nothing, and all I felt was excitement and the coursing adrenaline. I wasn't cold anymore, I was buzzing. I worked my wrist a bit before looking down my front at the slashes in my turtleneck. In an almost perfect X were two long scratches that dragged from a few inches below my collar bone to the opposite ribs. I placed my free hand over the wounds and let out a hiss of pain. They were mostly numb from the cold, but as soon as I had touched them the nerves had thawed. "Not that bad though, all things considered."

It was then I looked around and saw the carnage. My eyes widened as I took in all of the red that coated the trampled snow. Body parts littered the ground and I had to fight to keep my mouth closed and the contents of my stomach down. I turned to see Kate, looking just about as shocked at I felt, kneeling in front of a puddle of bile. She was sobbing and I instinctively went over to her. Gently, I placed a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay?" I meant physically, because it was clear that she was an emotional wreck. There was blood on her and I didn't know if it was her own or someone else's. I crouched beside her, looking at her.

When I saw her freeze I instantly turned my head to follow her gaze. This time my mouth dropped open and it was all I could do to not add to the little yellow puddle Kate had made in the snow. City. Oh Ripred, City. Her head was caved in and everything around her was red. It was way too red. "City..." My breath came out hoarse and barely more than a whisper.

How long had it been

Since I had talked to her?

Since I had touched her?

Since we had...

I shuffled a bit towards her, but at once I thought of Kate and knew I had to stay beside her. Where was Lexi? Oh please let her be okay. My eyes flicked frantically to the three other blank faces and I let out a heavy sigh when I saw none of them was Lexi. "Lexi!" I called out, yelling for her. "Lexi where are you?"

She didn’t hesitate, that was the terror of it. Under the circumstances she had expected to collapse, to submit to cowardice and turn the other way. Despite her training, her diligence, and her mental exercises, she had anticipated a sword skewering her from back to front, to end the game before it started. What she didn’t expect was a cold, brutal lash out, performed by her own two bloodied hands. An instant laceration was undoubtedly a stretch compared to her secret work in Six, even if both resulted in similar outcomes of death and suffering. Swinging an ice pick was different than pressing a button on a machine or sliding a needle into somebody’s vein. It was instant, it was messy. It was captivating terror and savagery in its purest form, purer than the white snow at her ankles.

The moment she lifted her torso and spotted the dark figure dashing her way, her heart leapt into her throat. She choked on fear and brought her ice pick into a diagonal path, straight into the vulnerable skull of a boy. There was a crunch like the crumpling of candy wrappers, and if this were candy then it was melted licorice splattering against her pink cheeks, a warm contrast to the frosted air. It didn’t smell so sweet.

She swallowed her heart and felt it travel into her twisted guts. Her jaw fell open and slack, horror scribbled into the microscopic patterns of her irises. His body dropped like a sandbag, detaching its brain from the end of her ice pick with a sickening sound. His blood dyed the snow pink. She recoiled and gripped the hilt until her frozen hands throbbed from the strain.

The cornucopia was abandoned, and it was there she reached her hand out for support as her stomach contracted and her torso doubled over. This morning’s meal was burning her insides, bubbling like the inside of a cauldron, and she summoned her willpower to keep in down. She stared at the ice until her hand slipped, and she dropped to her knees. ”Lexi! Lexi where are you?”

Marchello was alive.

”Here,” she croaked meekly, wiping her hand against the fabric of her jumper. His presence was enough of a distraction to keep her breakfast down, for now. There was no guarantee that the carnage wouldn’t threaten her again. She gulped the frozen air and pushed herself to her feet, body twisting to meet Marchello’s gaze. She could see Katelyn nearby, kneeling in front of the snow like she had been struck sick. Ellexias strode over to them, relieved that they were alive and that the area had been cleared of tributes. She paused when she spotted a patch of red snow, and the outlines of a figure lying in an imprint.

”Is that…?”
