My child, the number of divinity is three, It’s a triad of comfort, won’t you see? And though the day passes to night, Don’t let original motives fall from your sight. As we set claim under the trees and their hanging branches I scarcely take my eyes off of the girl from five, letting the thoughts of curiosity and hostility meld until they cannot be distinguished. It takes the epitome of self-control to hold back biting words, especially as I settle back against Lex for the third night in a row. His demeanor had shifted considerably, and the arrogance that had so engulfed him earlier had faded to the contentment, and as his arm wraps around to press my body even tighter against his I exhale softly, setting my head against his shoulder and shifting my attention between the girl in front of us and the night sky, blaring with its battle cry and lament of the fallen. Three faces cross the sky, and two of them had turned their blades against my skin. I cannot say I shiver when their faces fade. Instead I settle back, closing my eyes so that both visions match and the thought of the girl from five is as far from my mind as I can possibly push the thought. Lex and I didn’t have a need for anything more than each other, and if he hadn’t learned this from Hedvig’s death I doubted he ever would. If he was in denial, then we were in for more trouble than the threat of claw or teeth barred against us. We’d fight that monster as it came to pass. But first comes the break of day, and as I awake to light shattering the shelter of the trees I groan, elbowing Lex slightly to stir him from slumber. “Lex,” it comes as a whisper, and I prod again, pushing harder until I can feel him jerk underneath my touch, “Lex, come on, we can ditch third wheel if we hurry.” The chuckle that resonates leaves me scowling as I throw myself off of him, being deliberate to brush off the snow that’s stuck to my clothing onto him, “Lex, if you don’t get up in the next five seconds I’m going to shove so much snow in your pants you’ll find the true meaning of snowsuit.” I can sense the amusement radiating from the girl behind us, and as I stand up straight to face her I make sure our gazes lock before reaching down to collect our items, making sure to let it knock against Lex as I sling it over my shoulder. Staying here is only wishing death to fleeting souls, and so we travel again in an almost perfect silence, the chatter of our teeth being the only thing that threatens to break it. There are no chatters or chirps, no screams or shouts, and no anger or dismay to be found in the sights, sounds, or minds of the vicinity, and the stark difference from the days before causes apprehension to creep past the boundaries of placidness. And it seems that our steps are not a gradual fade, but rather a crossing of lines from one world into the next, for the line of trees gives way to a field of light, and turning back to face the trees casts a rather dark shadow on the reflective snow. I turn to face Lex, a smirk tugging at the corners of my mouth for the first time since the flames of the burny rabbits had been set ablaze, “Enlightening, isn’t it?” The creature that lunges towards us, however, threatens to throw us back to the dark.
