TYLER WESTBROOK
Tyler had entered the Games knowing that death and maiming would be commonplace. That much had been evident right from the start, when Heather's district partner had been impaled through the face, when Saxton had broken his wrist, when he had slashed his halberd across the girl's stomach.
But even with that knowledge, Tyler had been completely unprepared when his halberd had not cut, not sliced, but completely severed his opponent's arm. And now it lay on the ground, useless, as blood pumped from the gaping hole that now took its place on the opposing boy.
Complete and utter shock flooded through the boy from Five. He had just done that. He had just committed an act of violence that, should the boy survive the next few moments, would leave him crippled.
Tyler glanced from the arm, to the boy, back to the arm, his mouth agape. He tried to move, do something, anything. He was in the middle of a fight, after all.
It was as if the shock from committing the act had rendered him incapable of basic motor skills, leaving the boy unable to strike out, speak, or even vomit.
He very well should have been struck down, had his opponent been in any shape to execute revenge. But in an ironic twist of fate, it was another opposing tribute, the girl from Six, who brought Tyler back to his senses.
A sharp sting erupted on his upper right leg, and involuntarily the boy let out a yelp of pain. Whirling around, he came face to face with the girl, who had planted her sword in the ground and drawn a pike not unlike the one Tyler had in reserve. She had had the perfect chance to quite literally stab him in the back, but perhaps due to the same reason that had left Tyler petrified, had squandered that chance.
Tyler raised his halberd, ready to strike out at the girl, but a movement out of the corner of his eye caught his attention.
Somehow, somehow, with some ungodly reserve of perseverance, the boy from Three had stumbled over to Rowdy, and had managed to land a wicked slash across his stomach. If it hadn't been for the strange feels proof vest he was wearing....Tyler shuddered at the thought.
He took one last glance at the girl, before deciding that she was the lesser of two threats at the current time. Whatever strength the wounded boy was summoning would be significantly more dangerous than a perfectly healthy girl, and therefore he must be eliminated before he could deal a more deadly blow to the cowboy.
Charging after the boy, Tyler let out a yell of fury as he struck out at the boy yet again.
Whatever disgust Tyler got from spilling the blood of another teenager, nothing would be worth the pain and agony of letting his friends down.
