There are days when it isn't quite so bad.
Four sets of hands with semi-reliable shovels and enough sweat between them to stink up a shack makes the work go relatively quick, as does the threat of discovery.
Some days, they smile when Noah coughs a joke from between bruised ribs and split lips, even Jude, serious and focused as ever. Nino's quick to chime in with stories of his own from the day, and between the labored breathing, there is laughter that blocks out the reality that they're snatching fillings from the mouths of dead men so they can survive.
Through those days and the darker ones in between, Fitz comes to the conclusion that he has never loved anyone like his brothers, and suspects that he never will, not even radiant Penelope Libertine. What could bring you closer to home than days spent in the thick of it with your family, blood and salt and sand in your eyes, and nothing but survival at the forefront of your mind?
