The Bloodbath

This scene was as familiar to him as a nightmare. Everyone has that one dream that hits again and again, that nightmare that site in the back of your mind, waiting to pounce when you’re exhausted and weak. This was a scene from that nightmare, the last time this one had gone for days, the last time he had died. Swallowing heavily he clenched his fists, pale skin sweating under his rapid heartbeat as the clock to his life once more began to tick. Tick tock. The seconds slipped by until there was nothing left, and as that gong rang out, a fire at his own heart, his face paled, and he blinked.

Before him was Mace, a shadowy figure before him, those sad eyes as painful to watch as when he’d last glimpsed them before disappearing into that hovercraft. Bursting through, he scattered the image, the ring of weapons a devastating one before him.

Five minutes to launch.

Should I have butterflies again? They’ve got me dressed up like a little sailor boy and here I am with electricity flowing through my limbs. Who am I going to kill first? You know I’ve been thinking all night about who would be the most upsetting to die first, whose the one that I think would cause the most fuss in the capitol. Maybe it should be the star crossed lovers. Maybe I should take down the one most seeking redemption. There’s always the half crazed idiot who turned himself purple. But no, there’s no one that stands out in my mind now. You know, I’m not going to plan for what sort of damage that I do in the bloodbath. That would be too much like asking me if I wanted to win; every single one of these fuckers has an expiration date, and I’m just here to help them get thrown in the trash a bit sooner.

The glass pod’s cool to the touch, then, as the ceiling opens and light streams in, heat starts to fog the glass. We’re headed up, and I can smell salt, sea, and rotting wood. Just where were we going? Something to do with the sea, that was for sure, but was it going to be some sort of fantastic place? I’m pushed further up and up, and there we are, left to stand with the flickering bracelet on my arm. Reyes Moreno. The name means nothing to me—he’ll be dead soon enough, but he doesn’t have to be the first one that dies. Instead, he’ll fall when he’s good and ready.

Charas isn’t far from me, and I know that I’ve got to get my bearings. These tributes aren’t the tiny little idiots that I faced in the 65th. The buzzer ticks down, and I want to scream. I’m going to fucking kill every last one of them, or die trying. After all, there’s nothing worse than what I have left to go back to. I might as well enjoy being alive as long as I can.

I should be used to the beating heart in my chest, as the column rises up into chaos, where the dead will fight again. I should be alright, as the gong gets ready to go off. Without even thinking, I feel the shaking of the ground, a swaying like the trees in a breeze, and finally, I realise that I'm on a boat, in the middle of the ocean. I'm not ready to die again. Then the gong goes.

Since when am I supposed to care about any of this bullshit. I don’t fucking care. They’re all going to die in one way or another and I don’t think that it’s going to be me. I never really liked the career districts, you know? They all kind of decided that they were the best at anything, and here I am, getting ready to destroy the lot of them. I guess I have the help from my allies, but who could really call it help when you feel like the one in charge? I might as well go and kill my target, considering I’m supposed to get something special from it.
