Brynna and Jaden were so engaged in their conversation that it seemed like they’d forgotten Ronny was standing only a few feet away. But that was all for the best, as he wasn’t paying them any attention. Not anymore. No, his eyes were focused on the watch lying at his feet, the glass on its face shattered into too many pieces to count. It mirrored the way he felt inside. The moment Jaden had thrown it, Ronny knew all hope was lost. As the prized possession soared through the air, Ronny could only watch with wide eyes, frozen in place. As the body of the watch hit the ground with a thunk and a crack, Ronny felt his breath catch in his throat. As the pieces of glass flew this way and that, Ronny felt his heart rupture into millions of pieces, and he fell to his knees. Bits of the glass dug into his knees, but he didn’t care. The pain didn’t compare to the loss he felt at having failed once more.
There were no two ways about it. Ronny was no man, and the watch in front of him was just further proof that he would forever be a weak child, in body and mind.
He would have to tell his parents a lie, of course. Even now, in this situation, Ronny refused to let his grief flow into their lives. Better to have them think he was a useless klutz who couldn’t be trusted with anything worth more than the clothes on his back than for them to spend their days worrying for his wellbeing. “I was walking… I wasn’t paying attention… I slipped… Next thing I knew, the watch was broken,” he started to formulate a story. “No, that’s too general. I have to come up with specifics…. I was running down the stairs to leave school when I overstepped and tumbled down. Yeah, that’s better. No Jaden, no Brynna, just me being a foolish child with no sense of responsibility.”
Ronny was just about to try and stand up to leave when he heard Brynna tell Jaden sternly, “We're taking him to the nurse! Jaden you might need to carry him." There was no way that was going to happen. But wait, was she offering to help? No, there was no way.
“Don’t come near me! Just go away, both of you!” he yelled as loud as he could, his voice strained. Not only did he not trust Jaden to do anything but make his life a living hell, but if he went to the nurse, his parents would surely hear of the incident, and he would rather get beat every day for the rest of his life than let that happen. He doubted Jaden would agree to the plan anyway, as he’d undoubtedly have to face the repercussions for the state he’d left Ronny in, but Ronny didn’t want to take any chances.
Though as a fresh wave of pain racked his core, Ronny almost changed his mind. Almost. With fresh teardrops on his face, Ronny turned his head away from the duo, partially to hide the pathetic look on his face. “I’ll handle myself,” he mumbled, just barely loud enough for them to hear, as he slowly began to hobble away, one painful step at a time.
