[Dandy Gordon 12F | intro]
Dandy Gordon
Dandy Gordon
Morning comes without the usual optimism. Usually, Dandy greets the day with a grin but her lips can't seem to find one as she slips out of the Capitol made bed and brushed her teeth. Have to have them shine on camera, after all.
She doesn't see Wendell that morning. They have drifted from strangers bonded by their fate to competitors. Can't have children sharing breakfast in the morning and murdering one another in the afternoon.
Her stylist unhappily helps Dandy into a shirt with short sleeves and wooden buttons. It has designs of waves on it, and a large yellow sun over her right breast. Her shorts are tan with lots of pockets. Good for shoving supplies into, hopefully. Knowing the Capitol they may be designed to tear open and spill all their valuables into the dirt. But she also gets a little pack that wraps around her waist. Dandy thinks it looks pretty cute. While the outfit as a whole isn't exactly flattering, it seems practical enough unlike the uniforms from the last games. Dandy would have fallen off the roof and broken her neck if she had to wear those heels.
Once everything Capitol issued is on, her stylist pulls out her token. It had been so long Dandy had nearly forgotten it. Her sister, Magnolia, had brought it to her in the justice building when they got to say their good byes. It was a dandelion. Yes, so cliche, but the Capitol loved cliche. It was still bright yellow, its steam fresh and green as if it had just been plucked. Dandy's stylist slipped it behind her ear, arranging her hair around it and the floppy hat he had to deal with.
She was walked below ground and set on her plate.
Breathe she reminded herself. She had friends up there. A week's worth of knowledge and training under her belt, and a dashing smile that could open Capitol pockets. Yet, her stomach still twisted and churned. She was still a small girl from twelve and the odds, as hard as she tried to change them, were not in her favor.
Suddenly, the plate lurched and she raised slowly into her grave. The humidity hit her first. Thick, hot air that clung to her skin and fizzed her hair. Heat was all around her and despite the few breezes that swept through she was sweating by the time her plate clicked into place.
Blue eyes looked around, examining the tributes. She could see Adelaide's white blonde hair on one side, and on the other she spotted Wendell's head popping up above the tributes around him. He had allied himself with plenty of other tributes. He'd be fine, now she had to make sure she reached her career district allies. Aline and Gregor were hard for Dandy to understand, not that Addy wasn't either. All three were so different from her, and while Aline and Gregor frightened her initially, there was something beneath the grumpy glares and fierce stares. Something that Addy saw in them, and that she must see in her too. Thing is, the thing she saw in them was they may have an ability to fight. If she got close to them then she might just make it out of this... this... what was this.
Dandy examined the ground. It was thick rock but it seemed to hiss and... glow? Her stomach dropped as she remembered the rumble beneath her feet and the heat that hit the air during a mine explosion.
She didn't hear any canaries chirping, just the clock ticking down the seconds until the true fun began.
Dandy closed her eyes and pictured their faces in her mind- Gregor's dark eyes and the need behind them for something she couldn't place. Aline lips set in a firm line, her eyes always watchful. Addy's white hair falling in her face, her haunted eyes seeing what laid for them at the end of today.
They were her family now.
