the battle's fought
the deed is done
our silver hum
runs deep and strong
The Demented strikes and Tobias Staite falls; his canon sounds and shakes the ground beneath Jacinta's feet. She is unable to feel anything for the boy when he hits the ground, blue eyes still open and face frozen in a once lively expression — it's not that she has lost the capacity for compassion all together, but when fear is ripping through her body and she is fighting for every beat of her heart, she cannot afford to surrender herself to pity for a stranger. One can only carry so much.
All it takes is one moment of distraction — and there goes your head.
After the shadowy figure strikes down Tobias Staite, Hayden's district partner, it douses Hayden in its paralytic breath once more. Jacinta feels the chill of its presence, but it is gone as soon as it comes. It is almost too fast to hit, especially when it appears behind her.
"We'll be able to get her out, once that thing stops paralyzing her and she can get up," Jacinta says while throwing a brief glance at Cynthia. It would be so easy to just let Hayden die. She could step away right now and leave her exposed to an attack, and it would be one less person she has to compete with. But she doesn't want to be that person right now, not yet. Not until she has to be.
Ezen strikes at her, but to no avail. She swerves out of the way of his axe, her reflexes sharpened by the adrenaline pulsing through her veins, burning beneath her skin.
She eyes the blood spewing from Ezen Moreno's flesh. Jacinta has seen this image so many times before; on the second day it was Quillon, the third day Tobias, and the fourth day Clementa. "You're already fading," Jacinta says, watching in near disbelief as his blood continues to pool onto the earth beneath them, clumping and darkening in the dirt. "Maybe it's just time for you to give up. Being the last one standing is a difficult burden to bear."
Jacinta is almost breathless when she speaks her next words. "Trust me, I would know."
But I'm stronger than you.
Sometimes it still feels like she is suffocating, like she is drowning. Like the air just suddenly becomes water, an ocean, swirling around her head and choking the air from her lungs. It's how she felt when Quill and Tobias died, and on that first night without holding Clementa to her chest.
But she has already endured this much; she has not felt this pain in vain. It would all be worth it if she lived. Jacinta Salazar did not come this far just to be killed by the likes of Ezen Moreno.[Jacinta attacks Ezen Moreno; axe]
