Florence Spark was walking beside her allies, an echo of yesterday still tearing her mind apart. It didn't take her much time to find Stitch and Lavina, or maybe they found her? She rushed towards them throwing her arms around both people that had become her family in such a short time. Her world was whole again until...
"She is dead."
This didn't change anything. Florence knew that. Like Bolts and her parents, Ping would remain in her heart, no matter where she was. But she couldn't think clearly. Not after all her dreams of hugging Ping and talking to her shattered. Not when she realised she would never take her hand and run to play anymore.
Florence wasn't sure what was going on around her while thoughts kept flashing through her fogged mind, one after another. Ping couldn't be dead, not now, not so soon. She was ready to let all of them go if a disaster occurred but expected at least one happy day by their side.
The child barely noticed another girl join them. Florence wasn't sure when Neela appeared and how she ended up in Ping's place... No, Ping didn't go anywhere. They were an alliance of five, ready to take on any challenge the Capitol would throw in their direction. A force that had to be reckoned with. And she did her best at smiling at the newcomer. It wasn't Neela's fault that someone ended Ping's life. By this time, it was hard to tell if it was anyone's fault at all.
She only saw Ping's face once after that. A mere blur in the night sky. Florence's hand clutched Stitch's and she sighed quietly. She knew she would be dreaming of her friend tonight.
The Bloodbath was scary. But I wasn't afraid. Were you afraid? Are you with mommy and daddy now? Is Bolts there too?
The night came and the girl cuddled up next to Lavina. She had wanted to ask for a bedtime story before but nobody was in the mood. Even in Lavina's mean words, she heard a hint of a sentiment. Maybe she was mistaken, but her main rule was to believe in people, not suspect them of being heartless. A tear ran down the girl's cheek, but she wiped it with her sleeve. If she had more time to admire the costume she was wearing, she would have found it adorable. And so would Ping.
I miss you...
Her sleep was short and deep, as if she escaped the universe for a few hours. When the shadows disappeared and Florence saw a glimpse of dawn on the horizon, she knew that her mission was still the same - keep her friends safe. She was the only one awake at this early hour, so she waited quietly for them to open their eyes, guarding them in their sleep.
When everybody woke up, she was the same shining chatterbox, as usual, asking Stitch to help her make a handstand, finding a flower for Lavina, asking all questions in her arsenal to Neela, making up for the lost time. Soon they moved on, but their peaceful walk wasn't meant to be long.
A couple of unfriendly spiders appeared in front of them, approaching the small group quickly. Mutts. Florence had seen them on the screen before. And she wasn't going to let some Capitol design harm her friends.
They would not become the hungry monster's breakfast. Not while Florence Spark, the warrior of district three, was around to protect them.
