Annie does not miss a beat, and Annie circles Bette like she was hunting prey.
Except here, this was not prey that she wanted to hunt, but instead, a girl that she needed to kill in order to go home. There was no point in even trying to be nice about it anymore.
They were different, and that was the end of the story.
There was no need to call each other queens when it was obvious that Bette thought she was above it all, and the amount of words that she spoke, spoke volumes to Annie.
She did not care about her, and Annie did not care about her.
That had to be the mutual understanding, and if not, then it was time for them to let go.
None of it mattered, because the moment Annie figured her way around Subino, the knife found its way in her back. Another solid blow but was it enough?
No.
It wasn’t.
Annie had to keep going, but there were no more knives at her disposal.
And she wanted to panic, but there was no time for that.
Instead, she took a moment to breath, and just accept this for what it was.
She was tired of trying to make Bette see that they weren’t so different, because it was obvious that they were.
In so many ways, and while it broke Annie’s heart, she needed to place that out of her body and focus on what needed to be done.
If she wanted to go home, she was going to have kill to get it.
If she wanted to see Angel Mer again, she was going to have to somersault her way to a victory.
She was going to have to prove to herself that she was strong enough to do what needed to be done.
But the spear came back savagely strong, and Annie couldn’t believe how quick Bette had acted.
She gritted her teeth, pulling herself back, and as she was about to grab a knife, she realized that wasn’t an option anymore.
Her tried and true was wasted away, and now all she had was a sword.
Bette spoke, but Annie simply chuckled. ”Sure. Whatever. Label me what you want Bette.” She spoke clear and crystal. She did not care for the girls jabs anymore.
They were nothing to her, because she was not here to make her happy.
Not anymore.
Annie needed to stop being a people pleaser. She needed to stop letting people run her life the way that she let them. She needed to be herself.
Free from the chains that held her in place.
And even though she wanted to scream in agony, the pain getting to her slowly, she had to be strong.
She didn’t have a choice.
She pulled the sword from the sheath. The one that she had received from Hellion the day they killed the girl from eight.
She felt Hellion’s spirit in the sword, and she couldn’t believe how light it felt in her hands.
She rose it high, ready to bring herself out of this hell.
And then she heard a cannon go off in the distance.
It mustve been Denali.
Annie couldn’t help but smile, because she knew that Denali was a fighter. Someone willing to do whatever it took for her to go home.
To think that she had been holding on all this time gave Annie hope, whether Denali was expecting that or not.
She wanted to say words.
She wanted to speak truths.
But they would be wasted here.
Annie knew that now.
The moment that Bette called her a hypocrite, there was no way for her to break that.
That’s what she would be branded as by her, even in her death.
Annie just had to live with it.
And so with the sword in her hand, she took a deep breath, realizing that this could very well be the end of the road for either one of them.
She told herself so many times that she was ready for this moment, but she knew better.
She was scared shitless.
And she was not ready.
But she had to be because if she didn’t, then Bette would get to go home and Annie would be stuck here, dead.
She would go down in history just like Lux Pelotte did.
So close, yet so far.
And so she mustered up the courage, and swung.
With Hellion at her side.
