i’m checking my vital signs
drawing my battle lines
going to war again
feeling the rhythm inside of my chest
drawing my battle lines
going to war again
feeling the rhythm inside of my chest
One moment the beast is there, and the next there's nothing but blood.
Rory pulls back, startled (at her own strength? at the sudden loss of her foe? at the general ease of taking yet another life?) before her attention is drawn away from the gruesome image. Lady Death. Even as Ronan calls out the name, embracing it just like he is somehow able to embrace all things that should tear them to pieces, she hates it. But maybe, in this case, if it's enough to scare off her fellow tributes and give her four less things to worry about in the chaos, she'll accept it.
"Forget them, Ronan." She barely spares the retreating figures a glance. "Everyone else will."
Because who remembers cowards as anything else?
"How does it feel to kill, girly?"
Rory raises her eyebrows and is about to bite back that he should stick to Dr. Last Chance unless he'd like her to break his nose when she realizes that Ronan isn't addressing her. By some miracle his district partner has not only stayed but finished off the bird that went after Severus. And then he shoves past the girl without any kind of injuring brute force - the second miracle of the day - and Rory can't help but wonder what it is that hangs between the tributes from Six.
She doesn't have much time to ponder it. The fresh blood on Severus's leg strikes something harsh and angry into her chest. "Hang in there, kid." She tries to shoot him an encouraging look that she's sure is dampened by the blood splattered on her face before turning back toward the remaining mutts.
"You don't get to hurt him," she mutters, and even though to all the world it looks as if she's speaking to the Capitol-bred creatures, she's really addressing the Gamemakers. She plays by their rules for now because she knows what they could do with the information that they have and she hasn't yet forgotten her mother and Alex and a little girl who wouldn't understand, but at some point she has to draw lines.
(Lady Death.)
"You don't get to hurt him anymore."
