He should have known to never trust the dark. From a young age children spend nights shivering beneath sheets because of the monsters they are certain live in the shadows of their sleep. There is a common human consensus that danger can breed along the unknown edges of the night. Yet despite every one of these details, Orion found himself finding footing in the dark. Easier breaths and a steadier heart steering his constant clamor of shots. And for such a simple misstep, the night bit back at him with fangs of fire.
Staggering backwards, Orion's fingers furl tightly around the crack in his chest. Warmth that he cannot see covers his palms in a sickly warm stickiness adjoined with an insidious aroma of iron. Meanwhile, his head spins before his body finds harbor on the bark of a nearby tree. He is vulnerable again, and he hates it. But luckily, the shadow which has struck him has already vanished back into the swirling void of shade. Now there is only snow, hushed conversation, and the creaking chains of Death's approach.
Orion listens closely to the words exchanged. A question given an answer, but neither containing a call for an end of action. Orion knows where this heading, he can feel it in the searing pain that breaks every one of his breaths. A symphony of canons has christened the air and soon another would be joining them. But who's? He only knows the shape of himself. Is he far worse than anyone else, or is there another who can also hear the whispers of eternal slumber on the back of the snow flakes' breeze? He will have to find out one way or another.
Clinging to a moment of strength, Orion forces himself from the tree's embrace. A shifting world of silence stands before him, but his voice, not any louder than the sound of the falling snow, comes before the sound of his next shot. He will not allow himself to die without leaving a memory of himself behind. He's worth at least that much, even if he's a robot.
"Orion. Just another child from District Three."
Bang.
