Seen the stars last night
We're only vehicles for life
She stumbles without direction the heavy boots around her ankles keeping her from falling over the edge. The darkness is everywhere and she walks freely into it blubbering behind the glass helmet of her suit.
Eventually she stops, exhausted, and curls up on the floor. She doesn't know where she is, only that she can't go any further.
"Kassie stop, I can't."
"But it's raining."
"I'm only going to rest."
She shivered curling her face down into the suit as to hide from the world around her. Her watched beeped and she slipped her arm through the suit, bringing it close to her face to watch.
It was official. Like she knew when the glass cracked and when the cannon fired. When she sent a message in the chat that was never answered.
Kass curled into herself, holding herself like she had her first night in the big white house.
She woke a few hours afterward by the flickering of a light right above her. The hum of the industrial lights buzzing inside of her skull after such perpetual silence. She opened her eyes and found a world of flora and fauna but covered in a dusting of clean snow. Kassandra paused, unsure of what part of the arena she had stumbled into it- or if it was the arena at all.
She stood, touching one of leaves hanging down above her. It cracked, its frozen body breaking under her grip. Whispers filled her ears. They sounded playful, as if they held a secret they just knew she would want to hear.
She turned and found nothing but white covered leaves, that is until a shadow twitched forward. As if her very own shadow had lifted off the wall and stepped out for her. It stretched high above her, antlers hanging on each side like a trophy. It stopped in front of her.
Kass smiled, removing the helmet from her suit and setting it on the floor. Cold air nipped at her cheeks, as did the fresh scent of the garden around her. At their feet wildflowers sprang to life, rooted in the metal flooring tiles. Kass looked up, eyes wide and wanting.
"Are you Death?" she asked, reaching out with her wounded hand.
She had known he would come one day, it had been in the cards. It was cruel to take so much from her before, but now she was grateful to see him.
She switched from knowing Death to despising him, but now she wanted it more than anything.
Death was were Dio was.
Death was were her parents were.
Death was were peace would be.
She reached out towards him.
Take me she thought Take me away from this pain in my ribs.
The creature knelt down, its shadowy arms enveloping her, its head pressed against her cheek like a stray cat.
Kass tried to hold on to it, but it pulled away, slipping through her hands and left her in the cold.
This was not Death, he was kinder than this.
Kass fell to her knees, slamming her fists into the flowers propped up between the tiles until they were green mush. Like grass trampled underfoot back home.
Home seemed so far away now.
Killain and everyone. The cause. It was all secondary, all distant. She felt stripped to the barest of ideals.
Kass took in a slow, freezing breath and held it in her lungs until it burned.
If she couldn't die then she'd have to live.
Kass stood up, plucking her helmet off the floor and snapping it back into place. It muffled the hums and clicks of the world around her, but she was thankful for it. She pulled her blaster out of her bag, watching the yellow lights on the side glow as each blast was charged and ready.
In the early hours of the morning, Kassandra Nerys marched through the malfunctioning airlocks of the southern sector of the Arena. She walked through the quiet corridors of the Residential Quarters, glanced at the colorful buttons of the control room, before passing back through the snow covered gardens. She paused looking at the leaves and snow- it was easy to take it for other worldly. A place beyond life, but now she saw it for what it was. Another set piece for the Gamemakers, a pretty little dramatic room for a child to say goodbye in.
She raised her blaster and walked through the airlock.
The room was completely different in the light than it was in the dark. A single thick metal cord was the only thing connection the platform she stood on to the other side.
There were tributes there.
She raised her blaster.
“They always lose their morals in the end.”
