Your mother told you to throw out those weird cards you carried around. That didn’t stop you though. You believed the would tell the future. A gift handed to you from your father before he passed away. 

They smelled just like him.

Maybe it was wrong for him to instill this belief that if you look into these cards, they will tell the future. Maybe you found power in them, as they hadn’t led you astray quite yet. The Fool, had always popped up when you least expected it. The Devil turned upside down, losing the farm in a fire that you couldn’t predict. 

The Hanged Man, waiting for you to step out of your comfort zone.

Maybe Fortune would turn right side up this time, a magical feat that you have yet to see.

Or maybe the Lovers would turn upside down again. Maybe your mother would leave you, the only person you had ever been close too.

It was hard being the weird girl, being seen as the girl that believed that Temperance after the Star had meant catastrophe was coming. But you always prayed that Justice right side up would follow right after. That always signified a trying time that you would get through. 

But even now, as you shuffle the deck in front of your mother, who doesn’t believe in this “made up shit” that you do, asks you to read her fortune.

The Past: Empress right side up
The Present: Fool upside down
The Future: Death

It didn’t matter which way that card face.

It was never a good sign.
