Strangely, she had cared about Justice.

Just a little.

It had been nice to see Opal retire, even if it was for a boy who never knew how to grow up, or how, for that matter. He may not have been her responsibility, that being ultimately in the now-seasoned hands of Bambi, but he was apart of her corner. Topaz, Peridot, Opal, Justice, and Sardonyx felt melancholic that she had barely finished Ridley's tour before 'retirement.'

And so this was it, hair relaxed. Her permit to the district hardly even two years old, Ridley, her prettiest new project, being transitioned over to Sampson. It was mostly a soft jealousy, the sting of being betrayed by her own kin, but she couldn't be prouder. If anybody was to fuck her out of her job, at least it was family.

With it, and the Fenwick's signature above both of their names, the Capitol had decided to therefore revoke a queen's travel pass. Permit set to expire come the eve of the new year, and Sardonyx had a growing, itching pain that she knew how it felt. It was only a small comfort, like sitting alongside Sampson on the way to the district. Their permit was set to last for however their job permitted it.

Lucky bastard.

Sardonyx strained to look them in the face, but eventually they parted ways in the growing victor village. Sampson was off to meet with Ridley, a face she hadn't the courage to say goodbye to. They weren't the closest, Sardonyx had stopped personally bonding since Pillar Fray, but she'd be lying to say she felt nothing on the girl's return. Ridley was fierce, beautiful, perfect.

Everything this district represents.

However, Sardonyx had a little bit of a walk left to make. She knew where to find the village idiot, as irresponsible as Peridot and Sardonyx had no idea how Bambi stood for it. But then again, Bambi was probably right where she wanted to be. Be nice, be nice, be nice, the two of them had grown to at least be formidable partners. Surely, Bambi will at least be ready for somebody of Sampson's talent.

"He's... not here? Really."

"No ma'am."

"Can you tell me where the hell he is then, bartender?"

"Uhh, probably passed out.
Or blacked out, heh."

Classy.

As always, her eyes darted from the disgusting man straight back to the door; he didn't even know who she was. Sardonyx goddamn Crowe is in front of your eyes and you have the gall to demand she orders a drink before using your restroom. Retired or not, there's not a raining chance in hell she would use public restroom, or even a shared one.

Sardonyx hadn't picked a walk in heels back to the village, only a trolley ride. Eyes fixated on the streets she passed, touching up a simple grey lip. It was a metaphor for retirement, the whole grey scale outfit, but the make up was beginning to run and rub off her very finger tips. For christ's sake, Justice couldn't even spell metaphor sober and here she is, walking into a bar for dramatics on a sad boy.

It was one knock on the door, clearance checked out at the gate prior with a single glance at her permit card. "Ahem," she clears her throat at the door, closing it behind her. She carried her small purse as if it were a dainty dagger, between both her index fingers and thumbs. "A-ahem."

For fucks sake.

And she hits him over the head with it, "wake up, you goddamn sloth!" Her purse banging the side of his forehead twice before trying to regain her composure. "I walk over half the damn district just to find out your drinking at home now, Justice? I am appalled by your newfound responsibility, but more so downright offended that- don't interrupt me- that you would be day drunk knowing that my permit is getting revoked!"

Male victors these days, they just can't all be Mackenzie Pryce. "Okay," she realigned her shoulders, "and you know, you really should tell the man at the gate not to give capitol clearance to your home. I mean, really, it takes one stylist banquet and a loose lip until you wake up with Adessia Silvester piercing your eyebrow in your sleep!"

"Anyways, how are the children doing? You can sympathize for me now."

justice fray.

Someone was knocking. Crack, crack! There was a fierceness behind the blows that suggested whoever it was wasn't in the habit of waiting for drunk fools to drag themselves off the couch and stumble to the door. That or the jewel encrusted knocker was worth three times my weight in gold and just as heavy.

Ah, fuck all. The pounding in my skull sure made it seem that way at the very least.

The throbbing continues and my brow twitches as annoyance pulls me from my stupor, eyes begging me to ignore the pain radiating from a single point on the side of my head. My first instinct is to groan, but- well, my brain has always been wired to admire the beautiful things in life. I grin, something I'm sure looks rather sloppy without all the trimmings and trappings Bambi usually provides.

"Oh, how I've dreamed of waking up to-"

"Don't interrupt me!"

I'm more upset that even as my balance fails me and my lips twitch at their corners that I swallow the words, Oh, I've always liked feisty. But the sound of children squealing with joy in a distant room has its way of silencing me and the banter I'd always thought was harmless. Suddenly mentoring and Capitol life seems easier. I hate the split second that my brain tells me, 'You miss it.' And for the split half of a moment that I agree.

Sitting up is a chore of whisking my fingers through my hair, re-buttoning a now 'far-too-wrinkled-to-be-seen-in' shirt, and scanning the room for pants that I know I should still have on based on the way the sunlight washes through our second living room.

My eyes readjust on her as I fight and hop my way through the damn maze that is pants. She looks- just as she always does. A stunning personality to be reckoned with. Though I can't help but recognize the attire as something my mother might have worn to Scout's funeral. Or his cousins's? Kaiser's? Surely not Sophie's. Pillar?

Fuck, is that even in the right order? No... Maybe?

"Sorry, who died?" he asked, feigning disconcertedness. "I missed the name."

Being hit in the head again would be a blessing. There were far more tender points I'm careful to keep out of her reach as I move to replace the candle I'd knocked off the coffee table and discard of the empty bottle I would've broken my toe against had it not been made of metal.

"I could treat you to dinner," I offer as I pass her, brow raised before bending to rummage through the liquor cabinet. "Or we could find a way to make sure all the cameras are pointed in your direction for the evening?"

Really I was only being partially facetious. The Miss Sardonyx Crowe had always been good to me - perhaps not in the way Petelia or Bambi were - but good all the same. She made it easy to pretend. Easier to forget that the Capitol was a prison and the stage my cell. Never have I felt more at ease during an interview than with the woman currently wielding the threat of a pocketbook to the skull within a preciously manicured grasp.

With a refilled glass in hand I continue, bottle still in fisted in the other. "I'm going to have another drink either way so we may as well go somewhere classy, right? Make a night of it?"

I lean in close for the next part, standing on my toes to beat out her heels.

"I hear sex tapes help with publicity," I shrug, brow raised, ready for another bruise. "Just saying."

I'm grinning; the whiskey goes down smoother than usual.

"a new king has ascended, a ghost y'all"

"Sorry, who died?"

"I missed the name," he says, putting pants on at three in the afternoon.

Sardonyx would faint, but she was too afraid of touching the floor in this house. "My career you meathead- both of them!" She scolds, hiking up the corners of her dress to avoid the fabric coming into contact with anything. Her beautiful victor and her position as a stylist, both under one umbrella that couldn't hold the weight of it all. Seeing Justice and the eye bags he had started manifesting, she did not believe anything could keep this boy going.

And unfortunately, that's just how he lived. As if he regrets living past the age of seventeen, she looks over the contents of the house and swallows down both fear and judgement. A form of disappointment only a mother could bear, and she watches him dress himself as clumsily as a child would. Perhaps that's all he was, she thinks, a boy stuck in his own head. A body that grows regardless, she can hardly stomach the pity.

He offers dinner as an apology, and she hardly holds her breath, though she does fascinate the idea. Of the cameras being on her, "well, I do look good today."

Justice defined the type of man to stand up a good bitch- she hadn't just known that, but sold the idea to half of Panem. She would never understand what all happened to him, between Bambi, his wife and his other wife, and good lord what is going on now a days? Now thinking of it, when was the last time Justice Fray had been to the Capitol, he had all died from the limelight in a way that seemed sacrilegious. Sardonyx had done the work to build him up and here he lay, pantsless, drunk, father of however many.

"You can't be classy with a pencil mustache," she squints at his upper lip, at the stain on his button up. "I mean, really, when was the last time you've been to Bambi's!" Disappointments, the both of them, in these later years, Bambi had come to her own and at least feigned the brevity of it all, but she couldn't help but be concerned. If this was how half of Bambi's victors were presenting, what type of influence will she have on Sampson's career? On Sardonyx's legacy?

She watches as he stands on his toes, glass in hand and morning breath berating her like a goddamn mace, "I hear sex tapes help with publicity-"

"OH AS IF-!" Sardonyx grits, the sound of her palm and six inch nails striking his beautiful fucking face as punctuation. A step back, squinting something crazy, "you know what helps with publicity? Doing your damn job, Justice!" It chimed something bitter, she hadn't grown attached to Sophie, but she wouldn't have complained of her coming home. Instead, her model and Justice's sister was cleaved into five parts and she hadn't known which of the two of them grieved more. Grieved less.

She takes the shot from Justice's hand, but in retrospect she should have taken the bottle first. "You go and you shave, and on the way to the car you stop by Ridley's and thank that girl for doing her part and your's," she grimaces looking at the alcohol. Nico had reached a hand out of sobriety and looking Justice in the eyes, she realized why she had a new favorite.

It broke her heart, but there'd be a new heart break come next year. C'est la vie, she ushered him out of the room, to wherever his bathroom may be, before walking back to the door clutch in hand. "And so help me if you wear that shirt out-" yelling it almost as she made her way back to the front door, headed to the car. She left the shot glass on the mantle, drinking it so he couldn't, obviously. It was the responsible thing to do.

And that's all she wanted, really, just a little bit of responsibility.
