• Knitting is itself, a type of code. There are inputs and outputs, a mathematical algorithm that creates patterns and functions. The stakes, you posit--as you showcase a homemade hat--are just as grand. It is practical, and beautiful
• You code too, of course; the courses at school are rudimentary at best--you don't live in Three, or Six. But the Biology industry requires technology too. You're somewhat interested: you do like animals, and you like a challenge. But it's more that it'll pay more, help lessen to the debt your mom is still paying from opening the laundromat.
• Luckily, you have practice. There is an outdated relic lying in the attic: your great grandmother's computer, which your grandfather secretly fixed ten years ago. It is slow, closed off from Panem's networks, but fast enough to help you with your homework, or design knitting patterns on old software. You can only log on before the sun sets: blue light hits differently on the eyes.
• On Thursday nights you go to knitting club: you've been working on a sweater for a month. Is it sensible to knit warm clothes in this warm climate? Well, it doesn't stop you from searching for more yarn at the weekend markets, or saving up allowance for a skein of cornflower blue: it will make a great scarf.
• You love your dark skin, your bright curly hair that puffs up in clouds along your shoulders. You like how you play with fashion, mixing patterns and textures and adjusting how the shape affects your silhouette. In another life, you think, you could be a Capitol stylist.
• You'd rather be an archaeologist. The games are a horror that you don't like to think about, but each frond in a forest speaks of a history that someone has access to. You wish you could spend your days learning about what was before you, before this. If there was a past, there will be a future where you can breathe and not feel Death's weight staring back.
• But libraries are only so helpful. So you take a deep breath, and focus on patterns. Sometimes it helps.
