Callum Leare is tired of being tired.
He can hear them outside, celebrating his coming death with champagne and wine, glasses clinking and fighting to be heard over one another. He had started the night watching them from his windows, pressed fingertips into glass and felt the pulse of the Capitol kingdom in front of him. Knights and castles, it's like the Capitol itself was alive and he was the abandoned princess, pressed into a barricaded prison and locked away for eternity.

But he is no warrior and he is much less a hero, the creak of his suite door closing as he leaves mocking him when he steps foot into the hallways. His bones creak in protest with every step he takes through the training center, the fluorescent lighting of the hallways fighting against the nighttime sky that seeps in through the windows. Even at night, the Training Center was never lifeless, and he cannot tell if it is his own heartbeat hammering inside of his head or if it is the ghost of tributes past inside the walls surrounding him, beckoning him into his own grave.
