D A E M O N
Even with the splints, his wrists ache. The pain keeps him awake most of the night, despite his utter exhaustion from the intensity of the last day. His rest is fitful, listless. At one point he jolts awake to the certainty that someone, or something, is there. Looking toward his allies, he sighs with the relief that they are - at least mostly - unharmed. It is as he turns to go back to his disturbed rest that he notices the flicker of mist.
Not fog. No, no, no.
Only he realizes suddenly that it is not mist, which doesn't at all soothe him because that means it is something he knows nothing about. Jerking upright, he tries to look right at the thing but it seems to melt away out of his line of sight. He can never keep it in focus but distantly he gets the sensation of staring into an old, dirty mirror. Somehow, this thing looked very familiar. Then the image seemed to resolve itself for a moment and he finally recognized the face. It was Deimos.
The past tribute's ghost had come to find him. That was fitting since he was now in the arena like Deimos had been. With all of their similarities he had tried to learn if they were related, but with no luck. No one has been able to tell him anything, or maybe they were unwilling to. Now, though, he might be able to learn a little more about his doppelganger from over twenty years prior.
He didn't say anything to the others when they all rose in the morning. For a time he thought that the ghost of Deimos had only been a dream, and he both relaxed and felt a little disappointed. Then, eventually, out of the corner of his eye he saw the same shimmering that he had in the night. His shoulders stiffened slightly at the knowledge that it was not a dream, but his heart warmed a little at having the other boy's presence with him. He had been right, going into the arena had been his destiny.
They walked along the length of the beach, keeping the water in sight to maintain direction but not staying too close to the shore as the red water still made him uncomfortable. They had run it through the fancy filters they had received, but he was holding off on drinking it until he had no other choice.
Eventually the ground shifted again and they were walking through piles of petals. He felt the breeze and it seemed like it grew stronger with each step he took. Eventually his cloak was whipping around him and he was worried that he might be choked by his own clothing rather than killed by another tribute. What a pathetic way to go.
After what seemed like an endless time of having petals blown into his eyes and up his nose, he thought he saw figures in the distance. "Head's up!" He hoped his shout reached Kahinta and Oberon as they followed behind him. He also hoped it didn't alert the figures in front of them. With the wind whistling loudly and tearing his words from his mouth, he had no idea what direction they would fling them.
It was hard to tell which way any of them were walking, let alone if the people - or maybe creatures - he had seen were coming closer. Eventually he could see that they were most certainly other tributes, and with that knowledge he knew that it was too late to hope their two groups wouldn't cross. They were practically on top of each other by this point.
Raising his sword, he sank into a fighting posture and sized up their opponents. Both of them seemed to be in decent shape, so there wasn't a weaker one to focus on. In that case, he would have to take one and Oberon take the other. Kahinta would be able to help out whoever needed it. Maybe, if they did things right, this didn't have to end in someone's death. Just drive them off, show them they can't scare you. Despite the great breeze and the petals dancing furiously on the wind, the shimmer of Deimos' ghost seemed unaffected. Trying to mimic the strength and courage the boy had possessed, he swung for the girl.
