Pigeon and I found the fluffy little bastard on the side of the road when we were eight, summer heat forcing us out of our home and into the broken pavement streets. Pops said no but mama said yes and our twin hearts agreed, naming it Coyote because he never stopped howling. Time lost itself that day, letting it chase us around the fields and nip at our heels in the sunlight.

But time has a way of taking everything, from the youth in my bones to the games of tag to the innocent triple dog dares Pidge and I would toss into the wind. I realized time was one greedy bastard when I found the poor thing, tucked into the shadows in the corner of our living room with time pulling the life out of his thinning coat, urine spread from where his back legs had given out.

Pops pulled the shotgun off the wall and told me to bring him out behind the barn, eyes hardened because he’d done this before but I never had, and the storm clouds were brewing in my eyes while a mutt's beating heart rested against my chest, whimpers hitting my ears as I carried him. Age had taken his vision, so he couldn't see the tip of a shotgun with the safety switched off and the boy who'd loved him staring down the barrel, because time had taken everything and always wanted more and I was just learning what that meant the hard way.

I thought for a moment, finger on the trigger, that maybe time would stand still with the passing of a beating heart, the glint of a bullet in the sunlight.

A pull and a bang and a thud against the ground but time didn’t stop. It moved on, brushing past me like the soft twirl of the winds, pulling at the tears that dripped down my cheeks.

Coyote.
