She hadn’t left the bloodbath entirely empty handed. For one, her keen eyes had noticed that her jacket was considerably thicker looking than most of the other tributes. Perhaps a boon granted to her for her training score. It made sense, the girl from twelve had been wearing something similar.
But upon reaching the outskirts of the cornucopia she’d realized there was a fleet of sleds; and it was hard to miss that each one had a name engraved on it. She’d taken the one labeled Amelia by the rope trailing behind it and had launched herself off of the snowy hill, rapidly speeding away from the fistfight.
North had been the direction she’d gone in. Towards the trees. When she reached the bottom of the hill, she’d picked up the sled and half run half staggered until she was certain she had put some distance between her and the others. It was then, and only then that she began to pay attention to her surroundings.
The trees were wrong. Hauntingly beautiful in a way, but wrong. They were made out of ice, like cold shadows of what once was. Amelia breathed heavily, looking from one side to the other. She’d thought to gather some firewood and start warming herself up, but these would not suffice.
Even more interesting was the fruit. Gently blowing on the wind was a whip, a diamond necklace and a med kit dangling by a thin strap. Her first thought that it was a trap. Her second thought was that it was best not to look a gift horse in the mouth. She’d fled the bloodbath with the intention of winning some sponsors with her antics, but—
Amelia grumbled and started to climb the nearest tree, it was oddly not as cold as she would have thought, and sturdier than it should have been as well. She had just knocked the items to the ground when she saw exactly what she needed. There was a wolf watching her. A snowy white coat blending in neatly with the surroundings and two dark eyes like pieces of coal.
Oh. Yeah, here we go she thought, jumping out of the tree toward the wolf. She’d just do the same thing she’d done over the last few weeks of training and wrestle it into submission with her bare hands and her teeth.
That was sure to get the audience excited.
