Perhaps she should have spent some time learning to make snares, she thought grimly as she pulled herself up out of the snow bank she’d landed in. The wolf watched her curiously, flicking its ears back and forth and growling low in its throat. Amelia had to wonder just how much it had been domesticated by the game makers and how wild it had remained. Had it been bred specially for this games? Had it been kept in a cage until such a time as they could release it into the arena?

She locked eyes with it. “You’re gonna listen to me,” she murmured under her breath. She crouched to all fours and puffed up her chest, pounding the snow in front of her with the palms of her hands. The wolf reacted instantly, recognizing a dominance display and growling, its ears flat against its skull.

Damn! She had no meat with which to make an offering. It had been so much simpler in the training center. At least she no longer had any fear of beasts in general. Which raised a serious question. If a snow covered arena, what other creatures would be lurking? Evil snowmen? Foxes? Rabbits?

She’d a picture of a walrus in a book once. Something of that size would definitely cause some problems. Amelia howled and scrambled towards the wolf on all fours. The fact that the sled had come equipped with a harness had not escaped her. The little details like that? There was no doubt about it. She was being watched, and they had sent the wolf to test her. See if what she’d done to earn her ten could be replicated.

Amelia pounced.

Behind him he leaves a trail of blood, the pure white snow soaking it up before it crystallises. Frustration surged through him as he march ahead of Marsh, his weapon by his side. Entering the bloodbath he had had plans to paint the earth with the blood of his enemies, to turn the battle field into a river of red. But it seemed that the world would rather see him bleed instead, his enemies fleeing into the icy abyss before the war had even begun.

As they walked he found himself thinking of Vervain once again. Was she one of them? One of the twelve? She had barely even paused to look around before she lunged for him, desperate to see his life end by her hand. He should have considered it from the start, that another diary holder had also been reaped. Snagging his lip between his teeth he pauses for a moment, if she was a diary holder she had to die. He had to kill her.

She had to die.

Die by his hand and no one else.

There was no other way around it, her body would be another brick in his path to victory.

Part of his game or maybe it was just this game, it did not matter by the time the last cannon is sounded, her body will be void of life.

Tugging at the rope of his sled they approach a step slope icy winds slap him in the face, he hisses his annoyances as he buries his head deeper into his fur lined hood. It was so fucking cold. His teeth chattered wildly, his body shaking as he absently rubbed his hands up and down his arms in an attempt to warm himself.

"Why is it so fucking cold? Isn't enough that they chuck us in here to die? Do they really have to watch our ass cheeks freeze off as well..?" his complaints trail off as they enter what appeared to be a forrest that had lost its life, a ghost of what could have been. "What the fuck?" the trees looked like they were made of glass, perfectly constructed, bot a twig or branch out of place. It was ghoulish in a way. And as if he wasn't cold enough, the eerie vibe sent shivers down into his bones.

"You look like shit, breaker of china."

Yuki starts, fingers grasping his weapon tighter for the briefest moment before he see's her: Amelia Hale. The volunteer. The girl who up and left a conversation that clearly was not finished. Hands raised she reminds him that she still did not know his name. He gives her a sly smile taking a small step closer to Marsh.

"I'll give you it if you answer the question. Or are you just going to run again?" He gives her a slow look up and down. Not one scratch. But an empty sled. No gear. No weapon. No protection. "Looks like you might need us more than we need you." He pauses, his smile growing ever so slightly.

"So have you? You tell me your number and I'll tell you mine."

Yuki doesn't fail to miss the emotions that play on her face as the question leaves his lips. When you spend most of your life on the outside you become accustomed to the small, almost insignificant things, and Yuki had become an excellent reader of peoples emotions. Curiosity parks inside him and he almost presses her to reveal the answer he is looking for, but he doesn't, holding back as a small ping causes his eyes to turn to the sky.

Two parachutes fall to the ground, one embroiled with a nine, the other with a three. Quickly he snatches his up, not opening it before he shoves it into his pack. The volunteer from nine pants heavily as she opens her delivery and once again his curiosity sparks. Why was she so tired? She had instantly fled from the battle, only for Yuki and Marsh to catch up and the duo had been one of the last to flee the warfare.

She returns with a whip, a snide remark escaping her lips. Yuki raises his brow at the weapon, biting his lip to stop the inappropriate remark that fought to get past his guard. "A whip. Yes, you look very, ah, dangerous." Whips didn't strike fear inside him, his eyes traveling down the long tails. Unlike the javelins in his pack, or the pickaxe by his side. He looked ice cold dangerous, Amelia? a puddle of melted snow, soft and harmless...

But before he can say anything more she slings her belonging over her shoulder, marching forward. His eyes dart to Marsh for a second, a questioning gaze before he nods his chin in her direction. "Safety in numbers..." he mumbles, "I don't like her, but I think we do need her." He pouts, eyes following her for a moment longer before he sighs. "Come on." Grabbing his things he moves to follow, he isn't have to like her to use her body as a shield.

“And the answer to your question is zero.” Eyes narrow at the confession, remembering the moment of conflict that played on her features before she pushed it away. Yuki didn't like being lied to, especially not by some girl from district Nine.

"Zero? Are you sure?" he pushes, making his face the picture perfect image of innocence. "Thats too bad, mine is five." Which was not exactly true. The real number was three. But he counted the death of his parents, the reason that triggered being fired being consequence to his actions. But he watches her face closely, for any change in emotion.

The doubt that flows from her when the number five is spoken causes his a small burst of annoyance to surge through him. They way she looks him up and down causes it to combust. "You doubt me," he hisses, dropping the rope to his sled to stand in front of her, stopping her from moving forward."A-"

"-But no, I’m not sure. It’s complicated. Does it really count if you had help?” He gaze softens slightly, the fire simmering. for two of his kills had been assisted, Yuno always by his side. Always ready to swoop in, to aid him. And on more than one occasion she had assisted, throwing in a punch or a perfectly placed kick to open up the perfect shot for for the kill. But the killing blow was always made by his hand. The grim reaper was always invited because of his actions.

"Yes. It counts. A killing blow is a killing blow, no matter who else might have aided in the attack." He moves from her path, picking up the ropes for his sled. He remembers how shaken he was after his first kill, how Yuno had tried to convince him that it was her final blow that killed the man, sent him flying over the edge to his death. But he had seen the light in his eyes die the moment his dart had penetrated his eye. Yuki had killed him.

“Why are you so obsessed with me?” The sound of a whip being cracked shakes the trees made of glass. A loud sand that echoes around them, alerting any possible predator to their position. "Are you insane?" He misses, eyes moving around them. His body was not ready for a battle, his ribs causing sharp pain to spread through his chest with each deep breath, his arm pulsed with pain, blood saturating the thick material around the laceration.

"And I'm not obsessed. Just curious." He knew what obsession looked like, if he was to look it up in the dictionary and image of Yuno would appear. As an outside he was curious about a lot of things, and when it came from this stranger in Nine he felt the need to just push her buttons, seeing how far he could push till he combusted.

“Who’d you piss off?” Eyes on the bleeding gash of his arm.

"A lot of people," he smirks. "but I don't know the one who did this to me." He shrugs, pulling his arm to his chest. "Marsh?" he pauses for a moment, turning to face the broad boy from five. He too was leaving a trail of blood in our wake, his back taking a knife. "you okay?" Dropping his rope he moves to stand behind him, a gentle hand moving over the bloody gash on his back. "I got a proposition for you," he tries smiling playfully at the boy, "you fix me up, and I'll do you."

"Deal."

Yuki nods pulling out his needle and thread. "I will warn you that I've never sewed a damn thing in my life," he pauses, looking at the wound, there was too much in the way, too much material, blood. "This is gonna suck man, but you need to take your shirt off, I can get to the wound properly with all this fluff in the way. I'll need to clean it. Take your shirt off I'll get something to clean this up."

Bending down he picks up a small handful of ice, melting it between his fingers. It was freezing, his fingers going numb.

Once the shirt is off he uses his hands and the edge of his jumper in attempt to clean the wound. Before aggressively rubbing his hands together to try and thaw his freezing fingers. Whilst doing to his eyes dart between the needly and his wound then to the snow. "I'm going to numb the area, with the snow." Hands covered by some loose material of his jacket he picks up a large handful of snow before carefully pressing it to the edges of the wound, hoping that it will reduce some of the pain... and not cause an infection.

Then he picks up the needle, threading it. "I'm going to start now. It's probably going to hurt, so, I don't know, bite down on something." Pressing the needle to flesh he tries to ignore the flicking and groans, focusing on the sewing up the wound.


Once he was done he steps back, it was messy, and not pretty, and will most defiantly scar. But the bleeding seemed to have stopped, which was good. "Okay, done. Put should shirt back on, or you'll freeze to death," he says patting him on the back.

I finish stitching up Yuki and I feel like it could have been much worse. Of course, he is not a piece of poultry or some sort of animal carcass that I have stuffed with things and left out to roast. He is a human being, just like me. Though I do tend to wonder just how fragile we really could be.

I stand and look out for a moment into the forest, realizing that there were some pieces of what looked like jewelry looking around. Then I heard something in the distance. I looked up to see something falling towards me, and as soon as it got close enough, I grabbed it out of the sky. I open it to find a hammer, and I am impressed and confused all at the same time.

I place it in my bag, walking around until I see something scurrying through the trees. I wonder if it was the same thing that Amelia might have been trying to tame as we caught up with her. I move away for a moment before looking onward and clicking my tongue together. "Come out. Dont be scared." I said softly, far enough from Yuki and Amelia to probably not hear me, but at least see me.

I could tell it was a wolf, but was it friendly? Thats what I didnt know.

A gust of wind passes through, and I do feel uncomfortable, but I am crouched over with confidence as I look at the wolf before me. I think it can tell that I am not afraid, but curious, just like it is too. My hand is extended, and instead of biting into it, it licks it gingerly. I smirk before extending my hand to scratch under its neck and then it moves in even closer.

The wolf is pretty much on top of me at this point, demanding attention that I am willing to give it. "Oh whose not scared of people." I say in a song-y tone, rubbing the wolfs fur and laughing. I look back at Amelia and Yuki. "Looks like I got us a buddy!" I have no clue why I am so happy with this, but I just go with it. I wonder if it would be strong enough to pull the sled that I had been given.

I get back to my feet and I notice that this wolf was not alone. I kneel over again, and this new wolf has moved closer. I keep my footing in the snow as I look at it with kind eyes and hold out my hand once again. I take a deep breath, trying to figure out where all of these wolves might be coming from.

And just how lucky am I.
