Jacynth Voclain has time for words, but Luke’s spoken enough for this day, this month, and maybe, this lifetime.
He used to talk a lot, more than he should, always the one with a silly remark or a perfectly-timed joke. Luke Hailsham offered the punch lines and more often than not, he was that, a boy praised only for his sharp wits and theatrics.
However, here he stands, two lives under his belt.
Jacynth’s spear has the strength of a career and the other girl’s axe has the promise of his perhaps forthcoming death, but Luke’s skin has the marks of unspeakable tragedy. It hurts, but then it does not. It hurts less than what he’d had to endure, what he’d had to suffer through.
The blood tastes bitter in his mouth, and then like iron, and then like nothingness as he gulps it all down to ask a single question:
“Who hurt you, Jacynth?”
Because god, the cruelty underneath her skin was vehement and her words were so harsh they sounded like all the jokes Luke had told, satire wrapped into each word. They should hurt – she knows where his jugular lies – but they don’t. He’s so numb.
“You’ll never get where Bell, Noel, or Beck did. You don’t have a legacy, Jacynth, but I do—it’s a legacy of survivors and winners.”
It takes some effort but he pushes the muscles of his mouth up to a grin and there’s no kindness in there, only a hollow threat, only a hollow husk of a boy from before. The real Luke Hailsham had died once he walked to gallows willingly and this, this is a ghost, a phantom, a poltergeist. He is a haunted house that creaks and moans.
“No one, and I mean, no one wants you home. Hell, I don’t even know if I am wanted back home.” He frees his blade and it’s supposed to be cold to the touch, unforgivingly so, but instead, it feels as though he’s touching nothing. “And if I die here?” A laugh.
“Well, that’s that.”
His blue eyes dance across the frozen plains, finds Piper’s, and for a moment’s worth, there’s something else in Luke’s smile, a wisp of warmth, a spark of love.
Run, he mouths before the knife flies.
