Stumbling through a myriad of golden flowers, Rory balances on the bitter edge of everything she swore she would protect. Slated between her ribs are all the jagged edges of a heart that's been broken a thousand times over - once for Danny and once for Alex and once for Raven and once and once for Severus and-
The fragments are so small that she can't feel them anymore, but maybe that's a good thing.
The crown that balances on her head has blood dried into its ridges and it digs into her scalp with a sharpness that wasn't there a few days before. Lady Death, a walking corpse called her once. As she staggers through the amber-lit stalks she grimaces at the memory, hating them all for dying, hating herself for letting them.
She didn't look at the sky last night, but when the dying sunflowers finally part to reveal the smallest of clearings and a familiar figure, she wishes she did. Everything inside her goes numb. The fragments pierce within her chest like needles. Her grip on the sword loosens and she takes a step back, hiding among the flowers like a child.
(She is a child, but she hasn't been one in so long.)
"No." Even her voice sounds broken. When they parted ways it was to avoid this - the bloodshed and the betrayal and the shattered secrets scattered at their feet. She thought he was dead. "I - I'm not going to do this. I won't do this. We're - we're friends?"
She doesn't mean for the last part to come out as a question but it hangs in the air, trembling, like a petal clinging to a flower that was always destined to die.
