Detachment comes second nature to her. It’s necessary when you’ve seen the things she’s seen.
…okay, that sounds really dramatic, and sometimes it feels that way, like the universe has conspired to make her suffer. But Rowan knows life doesn’t work that way. It’s unthinking, unfeeling. So she’ll do the thinking, and not much feeling. No use blaming something invisible rather than acknowledging that her family is gone, and it’s her fault.
Sure, she didn’t start the fire. Everyone knows that the forest burns, and houses are just built from nature in the end. But what was her fault was spending more time panicking than acting. (What good can a child do in the face of disaster, anyway?) Now, a home of five had dwindled to two - Rowan and her shadow of guilt.
Being practical is all she has. Acting is necessary to make it through each day alive.
