Nessie --

They have slumbered for what feels like an eternity. Stuck in a dreamless sleep that was both bitter and sweet. Nessie could feel themselves coming apart with every gentle current but they were warm beneath the heavy nothing. That was home, that was the only peace they'd ever known. They could have existed for mere minutes or for an eternity - time did not exist at the bottom of their lake.

Their sister is the first to activate. Electricity crackling through churning water like synapse threading sinew, they feel their sister take her first breath before they realize what breathing is. They feel her presence disappear beside them, a gentle roar filling their ears as water rushes to replace what lay beside them moments before.

Nessie doesn't realize how lonely that feels until it's their turn. Living is immensely painful, they decide. Sharp and angry and cold, they desperately need to breathe but there is mud and algae coating the inside of their throat. It hurts and more than that it's terrifying.

That's why when they break the surface of the lake, a terrible scream rips across the arena. Loud and desperate enough that a spray of putrid water covers the things sitting on the shore. And then, they can finally take their first breath.

Bloodshot eyes that were once the color of honey dart around, completely panicked. They take a trembling step back, waves of water washing at their ankles as though pushing them back toward the bank. They look to their sister and find only blood and strength.

Instinct pulls them toward the tiny things that stand in front of them, a gentle ache rolling in their gut.

They want to run, but fear should not exist in their code.

Nessie does not have the privilege of free will.

So instead, they lunge.

Reece doesn't want to be here, and I can't really blame him. Not as much as I'd like to, at least. I can feel myself leaving my body again, like our souls are colliding in the empty space left behind — like I'm blinking once more, standing somewhere else, staring down at another body capable of breaking me. Down to nothing. Kill an innocent, watch two more die, and then tell a twisted lie. Make everything worse. Shut down, fade out.

Then wake up. You have to get up again.

He disappears into the forest, and I'm left with the absence. Of her moon eyes, and her curls in the wind, and the way this almost felt like home until there was blood on everything. And it's war, and I'm a survivor, and that means I have to keep holding this gun. Until the moon is pouring through the trees, and he returns to me, grief shining in our eyes. "I can't do this alone." Our fingertips meet in the silence.

We don't sleep, of course — but we don't look at the sky. Of course we don't. "I'm sorry for what I did. I wanted them to come after me. That's all I wanted." I drop my gaze to the floor, remember the way I had looked down at the blood pooling from her face, the way I kneeled by her side and reached for her hand. But it wasn't safe, and we had to go, and now my heart is beating louder than the anthem —

than everything.

Every memory turns to barbwire in front of me, until I look at the boy who has frustrated me more than anyone else in the arena, and he's all I have left. I am hated, and unwanted, but it almost feels okay during the quiet moment where I start sobbing. And I can't stop, and there's nothing to break under my fists, so he holds me in his arms. Just long enough to scream against his shoulder, his hand in my hair. "I miss them. It isn't fair."

None of it is.

One of us is holding a ghost right now;
or maybe we're both already phantoms.

When the sun arrives, it is a dim light in a murky, stormy sky. The turmoil inside of me bleeds into my surroundings, until I'm forcing myself to keep it together. Release all of my pain, and poison the world. Sounds nice. "Stay on your guard," as if either of us could do anything else. We are made of iron, and it feels like the rust has set in. I feel like water rising to meet the clouds. It's all I can see.

Funnels snaking out of the heavens, tearing into the earth and shaking the ground beneath me. "Stay close to me," as if I'm ever going to allow him to leave me again. As if I have the power to make anyone stay. "They want this to happen. Look." I point at a crowd of people breaking into the clearing with us, right in time to see the beast that breaches the waves. Howling with so much rage, and yet maybe it's just wind.

I wish it was. Trade a real threat for something made from our nightmares. Like this is a game, and I'm reminded again. I duck to the side when it charges forward, but it's not that I'm denying it. False danger or not, it's capable of destroying me. Everything here is. But I'm on my feet, and my breath leaves my lips evenly, and I'm —

I'm not okay. But I'm here.

Mauve didn't sleep much last night. The hammering of rain against plastic, turned into wind howling, whipping at the tarp that sheltered Robin and herself. Each gust of wind collided with the tent with a rage that Mauve could understand, the similar feeling surging through herself each time she closed her eyes and saw Bellamy, Liara murmuring that one name that would stick with her until she knew that that girl was dead: Fleur.

When the anthem played around them, Mauve closed her eyes and attempted to drown out the booming voice of Gamemaker Zsófia. She hadn't paid attention to those who had been killed, reluctant to poke her head out into the pouring rain as their faces lite up the night sky. There had been five canon and she knew who two of them had belonged too. The other three a mystery for the time being.

Stretching she gives Robin a shove with her barefoot, rocking his slim body, "oi, get up. We gotta go." Last night he had opened up to her a little, admitting thoughts that she was sure that he never really believed he would tell to someone like her. Maybe even to anyone, considering he never thought that he'd be alive till day 5. If she was being honest she never truly believed that he would make it this far either.

Slipping on her still damp boots a sigh of annoyance slips past her lips, her jaw clenching to stop her from cursing in frustration. Her feet already ached from being shoved into wet boots for the past day, and they protested strongly with each step she took away from the tent, groaning as she tightens and readjust the laced to secure them tightly. At least with the absence of rain her body didn't shake so hard, able to circulate her body warmth easier.

Around her the tree's shook as the wind howled through them, leaves and debris swept up in the gusts. Mauve covers her eyes in an attempt to protect them, in the distance she could see a swirling angry mass and a curse slip past her lips as she rushes to take down the tent, Robin scrambling out before it collapses on him. "Hurry up!"

Folding it she shoves it into her fanny pack, tossing it over one shoulder she marches away from the angry mass behind them. "We gotta find shelter before that tornado hits us. I won't be the tribute who is taken out by some fucking wind. Let's go."

The hiking trail opens up to an expose of water, the surface surging in time with the angry breeze around us. On a day when the sun shone down, she was sure the surface would be as blue as her sister's eyes, and just as welcoming. But today it was almost black, surging angrily against the shore as the world around us howled. Maybe the Gamemakers were just as unpleased as Mauve at the lack of deaths. But unlike Mauve, they had the ability to unleash their displeasure. First a lightening storm. Then an attempt to drown us. Now they wanted to wipe us out like ants, a tornado closing in on them with each passing minute.

Stepping into the clearing Mauve see's a couple not to far ahead of her. Looking over her shoulder she gives Robin a quick grin, "looks like we've got company-" The sound of sloshing water has Mauves gaze whipping from Robins and to the lake. The surface had broken, a monster climbing from its depths. The thing screams, the sound echoing through the arena as it takes its first steps closer to land. For the first time since entering the arena Mauve felt nerves play in the pit of her stomach, "the the fuck is that," she gasps, almost backing away as she fully took in its height.

It didn't just look powerful, that one cry that had torn from his throat had felt powerful, it scream had almost shook the ground beneath her feet.

Then it lunges, its movements slow, sluggish. Claws as long as the sword that was strapped around her waist, lunge at her throat, but she dart beneath them, pulling out her axe she watched as the blonde to her right lashes out with something that resembles a spear. Mauve doesn't know if it is because of the thickness of the beasts skin, or the lack of strength behind the girls attack, but it's barely enough to halt the beasts advances.

Clicking her tongue Mauve looks past the beast, to the tree line where more figures appeared.

Fleur killed Bellamy.

Darting past the beast, past its claw and it's tail she lopes her axe over her head, bringing it down on the boy closest to her in an attempt to push him out the way, "Fleur, I assume," she hisses, eyes as cold as ice honing in on her prey. "I got word that it was you who killed Bellamy, I hope killing him will be worth it." Because Mauve had every intention of tearing the girls heart out with her bear hands.

Yesterday was mostly a blur.

Silence was what I had begged profusely for at the end of it, to process and heal up peacefully before another day of bloodshed, but Aspen - as always - demanded differently. Incessantly, she needed to talk. About her feelings. About what happened. About fucking everything. It was infuriating. I just wanted to forget. In fact, I needed to. Or I wasn't going to make it in here any longer. I gave myself one minute the day before. To grieve and cry and mourn those we lost. But that was it. Those sixty seconds had came and went, and I wasn't going to be her shoulder to cry on.

Maybe it was heartless of me. Of course she needed someone to lean on right now, any sane person who'd just lost two friends would. Maybe I'm insane then. Because if I've learned anything from watching Nora and Willa get cut down right in front of me, it's that I can't rely on anyone but me.

I'm sorry for what I did.

That one gets me. Right in the chest like a knife when she said it. I want to say it, too. I want to tell her that I never meant to be the villain of their stupid games. I want to let her know how beautiful and fierce she looks when she's trying to save my life. I want to brush away the tears I know are running down her cheeks with the pads of my thumb and tell her everything is going to be okay.

You're so fucking pathetic, a voice whispers wryly from the deepest corners of my mind. Of course you've gotten a crush when you're supposed to be fighting to the death. I wince and tighten my grip on my backpack as we trek through the harsh morning winds. What's so wrong with that? I want to ask it, but soon realize whatever I think he knows too because I hear a response snicker back - really? You don't realize how fucked up that is? God! Like I said before: pathetic.

I ignore him and choose her this time instead.

"Hey," I slow my gait and match her pace, "listen, I'm sorry about yesterday, I was really fucked up after and I just..." The words escape me, now of all times, really? Maybe he was right. I am pathetic. "I miss them too, Aspie," is all I manage and then stride back up in front of her, cheeks red and burning.

I hear a cruel laugh in my head and sigh.

A few hours later we reach the water, but something doesn't feel right as we approach. There's already a knot in the pit of my stomach that's been there since last night, but now it churns slowly as an uneasy silence engulfs Aspen and I at the edge of the lake. She slices through it like knife to flesh, though, when she speaks.

Stay close to me, is all I manage to hear. I know more words follow, but I'm enraptured by her fierce protection once again and the rest of what she says is lost. But I gather the gist when I see the beast emerge and tributes scatter out onto the beach. This was a set up.

Of course it was, you fucking idiot. This is a DEATH GAMES. Hello? Knock, knock. Is ANYONE in there?

The creature lunges out at Aspen and my heart skips a beat. No, I think quietly. Vehemently. I can't lose her, too. It misses and I thank her lucky stars, but there's no way in hell I'll let it happen again. I reach out a hand and wrap it around her forearm, pulling her around to look back at me. "Listen to me," I breathe, letting go of her arm only to wrap my hand around the base of her neck. I press my forehead to hers and exhale slowly, eyes closing for a few seconds to gather my thoughts. It's hard to think when she's this close. "Both of us are leaving here today, okay? Promise me."

I smile softly at her before I break away slowly, eyes still locked to hers with a certain kind of attention I don't think I've ever offered someone before. Spinning on my heel, I free my axe from the holster on my hip and call up at the creature we're meant to kill here today. "Well, aren't you beautiful," I joke, a little terrified at just how fucking huge this thing is compared to me. "Just kidding, honey. You're ugly as fuck!"

And I swing.

She wasn’t sure when the rain stopped. At some point it had to go from a deluge to just damp, but droplets of water loosened themselves from Fleur’s hair and found their way into her eyes just the same. With one hand, she cleared the rainwater from her face, and with the other she supported Thread as they stumbled along the trail. She hoped they wouldn’t run into anyone else — both for Thread’s sake, and for the other tributes. For herself? Well, Fleur wasn’t sure how she felt about herself at the moment.

She didn’t regret killing Bellamy — she figured as much when she asked herself if she would do it again and the answer was a resounding yes. It was this lack of remorse — the way she flickered her eyes up and down his frame like he was worthless before striking — that made Fleur’s stomach twist. Where was the grand moment of clarity she’d anticipated when she was finally forced to face her opponent rather than hiding behind a handgun? What kind of person did that absence make her?

Fleur didn’t blame Thread for being angry, and she told him as such, fingers tenderly brushing against his bandaged hand in an attempt at comfort. ”Feelings are complicated,” she said, and she knew she was speaking to herself as much as she was to him.

Old wounds always find a way to reopen, he said, and Fleur wondered if they ever truly closed or if they just continued to grow until you either got used to it or bled out.

The clouds that hung overhead turned to steel before slowly melting into obsidian, and this was the only indicator that time was passing at all. ”I’ll take first watch,” Fleur said before her partner could interject. ”You rest up.”

Her torso lay half inside, half outside of her tent, knife concealed in shaky hands, as she stared out into the trees.

The sound of swishing canvas aroused Fleur from sleep, and she realized her tent was shaking around her. She rolled from her back onto her knees, body aching as she crawled through the opening. A gust of wind struck her face, and she squeezed her eyes shut as debris entered them. Fleur placed the heel of her hand against her eye, grabbing blindly for her bag before rising to her feet.

”Thread. Thread, we gotta go,” she shouted, blinking rapidly. As her vision cleared (or, more accurately, went from shadows to shapeless blurs), she reached for Thread’s wrist and hurried back the way they had come from the previous day. The wind grew stronger as they neared the lake, and as the clouds swirled overhead, Fleur’s gut told her they were likely about to stumble into something awful.

That something made itself known with an ear-piercing screech, and Fleur’s eyes landed on the lumbering form emerging from the water. ”Shit,” she breathed out, her heart speeding up. She turned to Thread, hoping he didn’t feel how she was trembling.

”Maybe we should turn back,” she said, already taking a few shaky steps back up the incline. Yet, a blur of motion in her peripheral vision made her pause, and she couldn’t react fast enough before an axe gnawed into Thread’s skin.

Fleur let go of his wrist, glaring at the girl who had approached them.

”Fleur, I assume,” the girl spat, and said recipient raised an eyebrow in response.

”That’s me,” she said coolly, fingers closing around the hilt of the knife tucked into her belt.

”I got word that it was you who killed Bellamy. I hope killing him will be worth it.”

It was then that Fleur realized she was staring down her victim’s unhinged district partner, and she attempted to keep her face neutral even as her pulse spiked. She pondered her words carefully as she slid her knife free, eyes still fixed on Mauve. Being cordial would be worthless. She couldn’t apologize when she wasn’t sorry. Nothing Fleur could say would make Mauve want to enact her revenge any less.

An eye for an eye, the whole world blind.

After a beat of silence, Fleur decided on her course of action.

”I did kill him,” she admitted. She flicked her wrist upward to display the knife, blade glinting in the dull gray daylight. ”This was his knife. Do with that information what you will. But your fight’s with me. Don’t fuck with my partner.”

She then let the knife fly, knowing that the coming minutes could be life or death.

He awoke to Mauve's diamond eyes bearing deep into his own, the wolf-like girl shaking his feeble body awake. The night had passed both quickly and slowly at the same time. It had been impossible to dictate how much sleep Robin had gotten. With the never-ending pelting of rain and the swishing of the tent with the harsh winds, he'd woken up several times throughout the night. But without a clock it was really impossible to tell how long he'd slept in each stint, was it only minutes between rain cycles that rushed him awake? The anxiety of sleeping next to a girl that could slit his throat at any minute didn't help the matter. Though last night they'd seemingly come to a verbal understanding of trust, Robin wasn't entirely sure how long that bond would last.

Six cannons had sounded last night, one had belonged to Bubby Caro, the boy he'd had a hand in slaying. The other five remained a mystery to him. He hadn't ventured in the storm to watch the anthem, though no one in the sky would tug at his heartstrings. Robin had entered the arena alone to ensure his heart was never broken and so far he'd succeeded in that. His ally was as stone-cold and calloused as the front he'd put up, this was the bond that held them together.

Everything was still soaked. The scout's uniform clung to his skin, the dampness hugging the lines of his slender body. Despite pressing out the soles of the sneakers with his hand before putting them back on, each step still provided its own little personalized puddle. His toes were surely pruned, though that was the least of his bodily concerns. After days of battles, his arms and thighs were lined with welts and scraped that over the days had turned into itchy scabs. The irritation from the cold and wetness didn't help either.

The storm seems to appear out of thin air because it likely did. The muffled intercom breaking out over the winds is hardly audible as twigs and leaves start swimming around the area. Mauve ushered the duo hurriedly from the area, and Robin followed with no hesitation. When it came to the came of survival, he was no expert. Hell, if he'd had his way, he'd still be holed up in the cabins. Though, the direction of the growing tornado seemed to promise that those no longer existed.

Robin followed Mauve's footsteps as if anything off her trail were lava, her harsh whispers of encouragement speeding up his tired legs. Around them, the storm had started to become dangerous, the larger trunks of the trees serving as the only barrier from chunks of debris. Wherever the winds were pushing them, Robin was certain it would be deadly. Day five and still fifteen tributes left, the Gamemakers had to be sour. Yesterday had proven to be deadly, and it was clear the bloodlust had gotten the crowds going. As Robin followed Mauve, he prepared for what was to come, gripping at a blade, watching around every corner.

She sees the beast before he does, creeping up from the lake towering over the rest of them. The water swirling black and sending waves of water outward. His shoes, once again, soaked. He couldn't help but feel annoyed despite the fear gripping him. In his final moments, did his toes have to be soaked? "Looks like we've got company" Mauve's words are cut off by a blood-curdling scream, echoing through his eardrums threatening to burst them. Its limbs whipping outwards, snapping in Robin and Mauve's direction but missing just slightly.

The other tributes began to show in groves. Robin recognized the duo from eight and nine who he'd nearly run into before. Aspen, and Reece, two of Willa's allies without her. Sad. Then Mauve is off, tumbling towards the duo, ignoring the beast that Willa's allies are taking on. Her eyes say what she doesn't, follow her, it's time. And so he does, he bolsters after the girl who'd saved his life. As naive as it may be, he would help her. As she slices the boy from eight, he unsheaths a throwing knife and lets loose. Something he was getting used to.

Last night was rough. Without Six and Evan around, especially after seeing their faces in the sky, I couldn’t sleep. I cried for a while, too. All I wanted to do now was get home alive. I wanted to win, both for me and for them. The problem was, I felt weak, and I definitely didn’t want to kill anyone. The thought of that absolutely terrified me. Then again, in here it’s kill or be killed, and now was the time to act on that.

I would have to fight if I wanted to win, and damn it, I wanted to win.

The roar of wind that started up in the morning alerted me- we’d all be moving in the same as one another direction again, I was sure of it. I could hear what sounded like a tornado (we’d had at least one or two of those back in Ten in recent times) touch down somewhere. Immediately, I headed in the opposite direction of it.

I knew the other tributes would go the same way, but I wasn’t going to just give up and let the tornado take me. If I have to die, that doesn’t happen to be the way I want it to be done.

So, I kept walking until I encountered other tributes (and some sort of mutt). The first tribute I saw hit the mutt, but then tributes started to strike each other. One guy was getting ganged up on, another tribute missed the mutt completely and I didn’t know what to do.

I needed to live through this, for Six, for Evan and for my family. Everyone I cared about would want me to keep on fighting, so here I was.

I decided it best, for some reason however, to help defend the boy that tributes were hounding on. Maybe I just needed someone to protect.

”Hey dude,” I said to the guy from Eight as I aimed at one of his attackers. ”Look out!”

He survived.

He hurt, more than he wanted to admit, a sliced up, husk of a person sat there as he tried to pull himself back together through flimsy thread that had shook in his hand as it was lit on fire even more. He hated this feeling, trying to pull himself out some sort of hole that he dug himself.

How could he when he was digging himself a grave.

He replayed the conversation, and he looked out towards the moon as Fleur had told him that he is correct in his feelings. They are complicated and messy and full of nothing but sorrow. He wished Stitch would have lived a thousand times over, just so maybe he could have been safe. They could have ran away together, lived a life in some far off place that would have been housed in silence.

But it would have been there place, free of nightmares that walked through walls and told them they would never amount to anything.

He lived in terrors, he was actually in one right now, but this did not scare him. Dying did not scare him. Why would it? He had already been through the worse of it. He watched someone he did once love die on television.

Not even a chance to say goodbye.

But now he was here, watching Fleur as she looked at him with concerned eyes. There was no way for him to quell her feelings about all of this, and honestly, did he want too? Did he care that much?

The graze of her hand on his might have revealed the truth in that answer, but as the anthem played in the background, he did not question it or even part his lips.

He was just thankful that he had someone that understood him.

The spear had fallen from his clutches as he finally got some rest.

And even now, the cold air had enveloped him as he realized that it had been a tad too windy for his liking. It smashed against his body, forcing him awake his tent had been stretched over him, he had been surprised that it hadnt blown out of his grasp. He quickly tried to pack it up, hoping that he would not be carried away. He looked at Fleur for a moment and gritted his teeth. "They really cant decide on a climate huh?" Thread had said, though he was sure that it was muffled by the wind forcing itself into his mouth. He gritted his teeth again as he wrapped his hands around his things.

His fire poker had been tight in his hand as he watched a Tornado in the distance. He had a feeling that he knew what was coming. "We have to head towards that now dont we?" Thread had sighed realizing that there was something brewing here in the arena, but he could quite put his finger on it.

He had a feeling that he was going to find out soon enough.

And so they moved, the wind almost carrying them off their feet. Thread had found his way to the lake, and he was cautious at first. He did not want to start a fight again, because he knew exactly what that would lead to all over again. He felt himself become a monster once, and he knew that could happen again.

The winds ravaged the area, but it had started to pass through to another part of the lake, kicking up water and splashing anything in sight. He wondered if they would see the full power of the tornado that had been brewing.

But instead, as he mad his way to the bank, he realized that there were more than just tributes around them.

A monster appeared out of the lake, and Thread couldnt help but have flashbacks to his brothers games. A giant creature that he had no clue how to describe other than being down right afraid of what was to come.

He heeds Fleur's words, agreeing that it might be wise for them to get out of here, but then there is an axe lodged in his back. He looks up, realizing that the girl from three had found a way around him, probably trying to get revenge for Bellamy.

He grunts as he stood and tried to put a little distance between them. He watched Fleur throw her knife through the sky at the girl, but before Thread could even say anything, he felt a knife slice through his neck. Thick, hot blood had drenched his entire chest, and he had felt like this was just like yesterday all over again.

He had a feeling his time was starting to wind down.

But a boy told him to step out of the way, and while Thread had been woozy, he had down as he was asked. He had stabbed through the boy through six, and he couldnt help but cheer in his head, knowing well that this was not the right reaction to have.

But any sort of joy was precious to him, and while he was being rescued yet again, he would always be appreciative.

Thats when he realized that he needed to do something, and while he could have went on limericks about how he was going to revel in this, fight until he couldnt breath anymore.

There was no point in wasting those words.

They were like treasure, and if anyone thought that they were going to excavate that from him, they thought wrong.

So with a grunt, and the fire poker still strong in his hands, he followed the lead of the boy from ten and aimed for the one that sliced into his neck.

Two could play at this game.

Nessie --

The fragile things prod at them. They're specks on an alabaster shore, shouting in high pitched tones that grate against their skull. Intense panic rolls in their gut, another wave of grimy lakewater rushing out of their mouth. Something is very, very wrong. They can feel it in their coding, a poison stretching across their vision as they struggle to take another step forward.

Nessie knows they're meant to kill these fragile things. Every time they lock eyes with one, they know what rage feels like. It is unquenchable and all consuming. That awful discontent must be peace, it's the only time that this wretched existence of their's is not agony.

Blood smells pleasant, diffusing through the water as the creatures fight amongst themselves. They lean closer for a better look. The tributes are haggard and worn, they look angry but not at Nessie. They're fighting each other.

Nessie wonders why.

He makes it sound easy. Like we haven't been here before, going up against impossible odds — like we didn't just watch two of our friends die only hours ago. I hold tightly to my spear, keeping distance between me and the creature, but never letting Reece stray too far. There are many voices, and sounds, but in the storm there's a kind of suspended peace. It's just me and him. And the way the sky is trying to unravel itself.

I watch him launch into battle beside me, blades catching the wind, and I'm grateful that we've set ourselves apart from the tributes battling a few feet away. I recognize a few of them, but none of them intimately. Which isn't the worst thing, I suppose, when the gamble is trust or hatred. I remember how Areto had stared up at me, the way all I wanted was to hold Willa's hand, say something to Nora to make it better.

Hell. Even the boy who loved flowers deserved better.

It's different, glaring up at a creature made by our keepers — by the people who made our cages. I have no remorse for this. "You know I can't promise that." A clap of thunder, another gust, hair in my eyes, and I reach out to place a hand on his shoulder. "But I'm fighting. I won't stop." And maybe that's what will doom me, the way I still haven't learned how to remove this spear from my grip. Maybe it'll save me.

"Don't you die on me."

There is a time for mourning, and it is not now.

The storm rages on, and I step to meet the monster they have sent to destroy us. And I refuse it. With every ounce of strength in my body, the way my feet dig into the wet earth, the coil of my muscles — I stare death straight in the eye, and I refuse it. Though it is a vortex around me, I am the eye. I am the center. I am trying to be brave when all I want to do is cry. Think of them, and how much more they deserved.

This is war, and I meet it with a scream.

Mauve felt her blood begin to boil, her lips pulling back into a snarl as the rage from the previous night re-ignites. For a moment she could see no-one else but the girl before her. She had killed Bellamy. She mutilated something that didn't belong to her. Bellamy was Mauve's. The possessiveness she felt towards him only amplified when facing his killer. Logically she had no rights to his death, but Mauve wasn't one who often thought logically, not when her emotions were flaring out of control, not when the animalistic needs to rip into flesh consumed her.

Bellamy was her's to kill and this bitch had taken that away from her.

”This was his knife." Her eyes dart to the blade, Bellamy's knife and she spits onto the ground between them. You see the need to kill Fleur was different from her lust to kill Bubby. With Bubby she wanted to play around with her prey, she wanted to break him until he was begging her for breath. She wanted to watch him unravel when he realised that the only future for him was his heart at the end of her blade. But... But with Fleur she simply wanted to see the girl dead. She wanted her blood on her hands, and a death that was violent and drawn out would have been ideal, but with her body on fire, her emotions out of control, just simply being dead would suffice. Might even calm the storm that tore through her each moment she stood staring at the girl.

"Do with that information what you will. But your fight’s with me." Yes, her fight was with her- "Don’t fuck with my partner," oh. Wait. What was this? Mauve snarl turns into a twisted smirk as she wipes the blade of her axe of her thigh. Maybe Mauve was letting her emotions get the better of her. Her gaze flicks to the boy whose back her axe had buried itself in. Maybe there was something to break first, before she sent this girl to a shallow grave.

An eye for an eye.

Mauve would take away her partner, kill him before her eyes, let her watch, before she killed her.

Her- Bellamy's- knife cuts into the vulnerable flesh of her stomach, her momentary distraction enough for her movements to be sloppy, slow. Cursing she dances out of reach as Robin catches up, a knife sent sailing through the air and into her targets throat. Yesterday she might have reprimanded him for getting in her way, today she rejoiced in it, turning to him with a grin, "we are going to kill that one first," she gestures with her chin towards the boy with the knife buried into his throat. "Then she is mine." She points her axe towards Fleur-

Then a fire pocket is buried into Robins stomach and Mauve feels a growl climb her throat as her eyes turn to the boy she recognised to be an ally of Six. "Stay away from him," she snarls, baring her teeth as she tries to put herself between the boy and Robin. Like with Bellamy, Mauve felt a possessiveness towards the boy. She belonged to him in a way that caused a scream of frustration to escape her lips as Fleur's partner sent his weapon into her Robin's leg.

"Stay. Back," she growls, as she closes some of the distance between Fleur's partner and herself.

"I'm going to kill you," she purrs, her gaze shooting from his too Fleur's and back again. "And she is going to watch."

The girl spat at Fleur’s feet, and Fleur resisted the urge to flash a taunting grin lest her teeth get punched out. Mauve took up that task instead, lips curling up as her eyes flickered to Thread —

This wrathful girl — although, was Fleur any less wrathful, skin on fire and knuckles whitening around the hilt of her knife — would zero in on the one thing Fleur had left just to make her suffer. It was the kind of thing they were taught to avoid back home — not making enemies. But there would never be such a thing as an enemyless tribute. It was just that her adversaries had become Thread’s too.

”We’re going to kill that one first, and then she is mine,” Mauve growled, and Fleur let out a half-indignant half-flustered laugh.

”I’m already yours, baby,” she purred. ”What, are you too much of a coward to face me yourself instead of taking it out on someone else?”

Almost immediately Fleur realized the hypocrisy in her words, but before she could act, she found herself rolling on the ground to escape the lake beast’s claws. Just as she rolled onto her stomach, hands pressed against the still soggy earth, the girl clipped the back of Thread’s head. Fleur’s mouth twitched instinctively, eyes boring into the side of Mauve’s head. At the same time, a fifth person entered the foray, and with great relief she realized it was the boy from Ten coming to their aid.

”You know,” Fleur shouted as she climbed back to her feet, ”your friend talked a lot.”

She stalked closer to the girl, leaning close to her ear.

”You know what he said?” she said in a low voice, before jumping back in case Mauve had a mind to behead her then and there. ”He said there was no use in us being angry at him because he hadn’t done shit to us.”

Her voice got louder, the ends of her sentences becoming high-pitched.

”You know what Bellamy said?” she demanded, spitting the first syllable of the boy’s name. ”Boo fucking hoo. That’s what he said! Revenge is useless, and your friend knew it.”

Fleur took a ragged breath, arm tensing as she prepared to strike.

”You’d do well to take his advice,” she rasped.

The spears collapsed in on his frailing body in succession. First piercing his stomach, the poker growing out of him like a new appendage. Looking down it was hard to imagine that the poker was literally inside of him. He could see it clear as day when looking down, in those brief seconds there was nothing else in the world besides Robin and the spear. But there was no pain at first, just the two stuck together in a twist of fate. The second pierced his calf, sending the boy plunging immediately to his knee. He felt that one immediately, the pain encapsulated his body in flame. All at once.

It was as if the singular cord keeping his body together from head to toe had been snipped. He looked around desperately for the three sisters of stories old that thread the strings of life to their souls. If they were real, they'd be present right now. Somewhere along the treelines, heckling the dying boy. Robin couldn't tell if the first spear was still attached to him anymore, the world grew fuzzy very quickly.

He'd been close to death before in the arena, the Floraspore fight he'd had on the second day had left him laying for hours paralyzed in the picnic fields. Robin had been grateful for his mentor Flynn for surviving that fight, the antidote he'd sent down priorly in sponsorship being the thing that ensured his survival. But here? Flynn was useless. The skies were black and stormy, the tornado ever-looming in the distance, threatening to close in if its demands weren't met. Those demands, of course, being blood. Most of which, Robin was covered in. His own, at that.

The world quickly swirled into chaos. With the flooding of the water and the twin monstrous entities that hankered over the lake threatening to strike them down, this is what they had wanted the whole time, from day one. The tributes hadn't given them enough bloodshed or intensity, and so the Gamemakers brought it upon themselves. At the cost of what? Probably his own life, Robin thought. Everything was sore. It ached with every twitch. Even when he attempted to stable himself on his one good foot, he found the world trying to beat him down. The raindrops pelted against his wounds, serving as a constant reminder of the rips and tears across his body.

Flashes of hair pass like the lightning cracking overhead. There were several of them now amassed lakeside, though the exact number Robin was unsure as he squinted through the storm. He could barely hear the screams and threats over the throbbing in his ears. Though he could register they were speaking, it all seemed as though it were happening in another room, another place, far from here.

He needed to stay grounded. Here. Present. Dig his toes in the dirt and find his consciousness again. The water tugged at his ankles, his calf demanding he lay to rest, but there wasn't time for that anymore. Mauve was signaling once again, battle movements. She pointed to the boy from Eight, he himself looking battered from the throws they'd sent his way. Perhaps it wasn't a done deal, Robin could make it farther yet. So much was happening around him, fighting and screaming, creatures and bloodshed, but at that moment there was only Robin and a knife.

"I have to -" he mutters, unleashing the blade from his grip. He has to fight, he has to swing, he has to win. The words are barely audible over the sounds of the storm, but his whispered mantra was all that could give him strength.
