No New Posts The Academy Square

Dividing the two Academies is a large clearing, where recruits from both schools can congregate to show their support, practice their skills on the training grounds, or simply relax with their fellow recruits, feeding the rivalry that has grown between the two Academies as they have grown. In the center of the Square is a large flower bed that is expertly maintained. Though the Games are not shown in District Thirteen, the faces of the tributes lost in the yearly Games are shown year-round, and updated with every Games that comes and goes.

No New Posts Ames Academy

Those who attend Ames Academy are greeted daily by the looming figure of Adder Ames, the first ever Victor of Panem’s Hunger Games. Her eyes stare straight ahead, up into the metallic ceilings of Thirteen but it is as if she is staring at so much more, bravery written even on the face of a girl District Thirteen was never given the privilege of knowing. And while it is true that wounds litter the form of the metal, true to the source of their inspiration, the blood that would normally pour from such deep cuts are hidden by the shining red metal of the statue itself, the color of anger and fury and everything that it took for the girl to remain standing in the end. In her right hand is the very crown that the Capitol forced onto her head in the wake of her victory, though it is nothing regal and nothing to be respected. Instead, the silver metal seems to bend and wilt in her grasp, silver jewels and diamonds fallen to the ground below.

The shadow of the statue is written in the same red color of its form, bleeding into the very ground that the recruits walk on and creating a carmine red walkway leading to the doors of the Academy. Those who walk this path are reminded of the history the Academy has built its legacy on, and of the knowledge that those who stand tall in the face of adversity carve a path for the rest of their people to follow. Above the doors to the school is a carved message, scrawled in script:

Ames Academy
In the shadow of those who fought to remain standing.

The statue of Dmitri Kostas greets every spectator that casts their gaze on it, a tribute to the first ever taken by the Hunger Games. Dmitri Kostas stands tall, shoulders squared, chin raised and face staring bravely into that which District Thirteen has never known. Still, true to its source cuts and wounds litter the metal statue, scattered across its arms and legs. Though, what pours from the cuts is not blood but instead shimmering bronze water. The streams wrap and curl around the body of the first boy lost, cloaking its form and turning the tributes' wounds into the very armor that shields from enemies.

The water eventually falls into a moat that surrounds the statue, wrapping around the figure in a protective barrier. A million shimmering coins sit at the bottom of the water, remnants of citizens of Thirteen in memory. It’s said that tossing a coin into the water will bring protection for your loved ones, but just as many leave a coin in the current to remember that which has been lost.

Kostas Academy
In the wake of those who have fallen.
